Going at it today some more. Honestly I don't think the parts are complicated, I just can't get the floats to sit right at 14mm. I measure again and again, and when I flip the carbs upside down the floats sink all the way without any return/springing.  Do you guys recommend a carb rebuild kit?
it comes with floats, gaskets etc.

Ok, now you have the carbs at 90 degrees from rightside up. Turn the further so the floats are up more, but not all the way, like this \, about. See, when you turn the carbs upside down, there will be no springy-ness, you wouldn't want that anyways. By having them at an angle, with the floats closing the needle, but not pushing the pin. If you hold it like this, you should be able to push the float and see the pin go in and when you release the float, the pin will push out.

Do this, hold your carbs upside down. The needles are closed and the pin is pushed in. Now, turn the carbs slowly, with the open end of the floats leading. Watch closely. As you turn, they will suddenly move just a bit. STOP. The needle will be closed, but the pin will have pushed the float out just a bit. Now measure right at the middle SIDE of the float. Either side, it does not matter. Measure to your 14mm at that point taking care to make sure the needle stays closed but the pin does not compress.

If you still are having issues, take  float off and take the needle out. The pointy end of course goes in first. On the other end, you should see the pin I am referring to.

The floats do not have to be exact. If you look at any service manual it will give float settings with a margin of error like 14mm +/- 1mm.

Are you sure you've got spring loaded needles? You might have picked up a set of solid needles.

I get the majority of my carb parts local. He carries K&S stuff and I've had no complaints with them. If I do go online to buy carb parts I typically go to here: http://www.siriusconinc.com/

They have an ebay store and they too stock K&S brand parts.

I got a bad seat cover from them once and their customer service was outstanding. I always recommend them now whenever I get the chance.

I guess I have only ever had spring loaded needles. So that is what I am used to.

Problem solved.

Hey everyone, It's been a while since I posted regarding this issue! It has taken me that long to get the old lady running. After countless hours of adjusting floats, jets etc, I decided to swap the CR-carbs for the factory ones. Actually, I was lucky to meet a guy who had a beautiful set of 78-carbs with accelerator pumps and purchased right away.
So the old ones were removed, sparks plugs/cables changed, other set installed, timing and valves checked (all good by the way) and now she rides nicely. Actually, I can't believe how well it runs! there's no more hesitation when opening throttle, no popping and I am a happy camper.
I had been reading for quite a while how temperamental CR's are, and difficult to adjust but I wanted to give it a try, but it was just too much for me.

Thanks everyone!

Well, just a thought, if you do not want the cr carbs, you could sell them and get a good chunk of coin for them. Just a thought.

Happy you got it running though. Nothing better than a bike that runs good!
