Lowering front forks

A.K.Marder
I just purchased a 1980 Honda CB750 supersport, I am currently lowering the bike because I'm just a tad too short for the bike.  I figured I would convert it to a cafe racer eventually but eventually is becoming mandatory now.  Can you tell this is my first bike?

I went ahead and lowered the rear and I thought lowering the front would be just as simple by loosening the triple trees and sliding it down BUT they will hit my handlebars.  So I purchased clip on handlebars, my next issue is, is figuring out the distance of a new brake line that will need to be replaced.

Suggestions?

Here is a link to a thread on how to properly shorten front forks. http://honda-cb750-s.456789.n3.nabble.com/How-to-shorten-forks-td4042465.html Sliding them up in the triple tree can cause problems both mechanical and safety such as the fender/tire hitting the bottom tree and brake components. As for brake lines, when I need to do them I take the bike to my local Tompkins Ind, and have them make them up to fit the bike. Cost is around $30.00 a line.

Is the current line no good? A longer line is no big deal other than cosmetics. If you lowered it a bit, the line certainly won't need to be any longer. If it must be shorter, take the line off and measure it and then order slightly shorter. Don't go too short though otherwise you'll have real problems.
There is a site in the parts thread, techna-fit, you can get CHEAP braided lines there. Got some for my magna, 3 lines for the front brake and a clutch line and it was just a bit over 60. Anywhere else I found and it would have been double that.

My current brake line is fine, it will just need to be shorter but I wasn't
sure if I would be able to figure it out before I actually start the
process.  I am lowering the forks about 2in-3in and just trying to go about
it in the safest way.  So far the advice received was to buy a new brake
line of correct length and not bothering to cut and refit it for safety
reasons.

This is my first time working on a motorcycle with some guidance of a
couple motorcycle friends helping.  I'm a welder and fabricator but no way
a mechanic.

Thorough thread!!! Thank you! Quick question, did you also cut down the outer tube in addition to the spring and then re-tap it?

You are going to want to trial fit things before even touching the brake line. You may find you don't need to shorten anything once you have the routing down. Also, an inch extra on the line is of no concern for operation. The only time it may be is if the line has a high spot and that is only for bleeding the line. Any other concern is cosmetic. Fluid doesn't care as long as there is no air. I've seen people measure and then get a line too short and have the regular length work fine. So, always trial fit things before you decide you need a new line.

Yeah, I'd never cut a brake line unless I knew exactly what I was doing. They are cheap enough that I wouldn't risk my life for $20.
