If I remember right there are 1 or 2 that are hidden. Look at the middle of the valve cover and there is a small squarish cover that you can take off to reveal the hidden ones.  My dad said he took the valve cover off (long story short the bike I have my dad worked on years ago) without taking out the engine and it is the same as yours.

You will have to either pull it or cut out the 2 lower frame rails above the valve cover.  Tools runs his without those frame pieces with no problems

I just went outside and looked at the part that has to come off.Ya mean i gotta cut the frame frame.I was thinking I was gonna find a frame support.Your SURE this wont be a problem? Its scaring me!!
If I unbolt the front of the motor will it drop enough to get the valve cover off?I have half a mind to either leave it alone or clean it up on the bike.Shiny Mike

From everything I have read on these you have to take out the engine or cut the frame to get the valve cover off like these guys are saying.  I'll talk to my dad see if he can remember what he did, though don't hold out too much hope cuz he's getting old and cant remember stuff from almost 15 years ago very well.  I've seen him get at and take out parts on a car I thought was impossible before so maybe if he stares at it for a few hours he will remember what he did.

All I can tell you is from when I was a kid and saw/helped him work on it. I know he never took the engine out of the frame, I don't remember seeing him take out the valve cover, but the valve cover is suspiciously clean and polished (just a lot of dirt build up in the 15 odd years it has sat).  He seems to remember having it off of the bike to clean it and said it was a mother to get out but he said he did it some how.

You cannot remove the rocker cover on a SOHC without dropping the engine or cutting the frame.

Ha well just as I posted that my dad called me.  I had him take a look at the bike and see if he could remember what he did.  He wanted to say he took out the motor mounts to lower the engine then rolled the cover either forward or to the rear of the bike to get it off.  However, the more he thought about it, the more he thought that was something he wanted to do that but never could get it out; he just wasn't sure.

Even if it is possible by taking out the motor mounts, you might as well just do that then tip the bike on its side and pull the engine.

Edit:^^^^^yeah i would take these guys advice they have way more experience on this than me or my dad so if they say its impossible, it is.

I think it has something to do with the Japanese sense of humour.  Have you seen those game show clips on the tv where they domthings like smothering their heads in honey then stick them in a bees nest?

Not sure if its humor or just some engineers getting very proud of their work. Sure those frame bars aren't totally necessary but, by god if the bike is a failure its not going to because the frame is flexing.

You guys crack me up sometimes.   It does suck that it wont come out.I guess it just shows how confident they were in their engine

I think they did that to keep people from doing their own work on the bikes. they made the tubes on the matics bent, so, you could remove the valve cover, and head with out removing the engine. However they were aiming that bike at a different type of buyer, and that buyer was not the type to do their own work.
If, you look at my "Mortal Vindication build", you will see the start of mine.
Oh Cycle-X makes a kit that makes those tubes removable.

Re: How do I get my valve cover off?

Some of you guys are pretty funny, kinda like the guy at Honda who thought pulling the motor or cutting the frame to get to the valve cover off is funny.I still have not decided if I'm gonna cafe it or put it back stock.I'm kinda leaning toward stock.Either way I'm not gonna cut a stock 12,000 mile 35 year old bike up,unless I go with the cafe racer. For now I'm gonna shine it up the best I can on the bike.
Before I spend more time on it I want to know if it runs.It was last plated in 2005.The seller told me it ran when parked. We all know how that can work out!!
I'm trading a polish job(GS1100e) for a carb rebuild on the Honda.I was hoping I would have the carbs back by now,but the GS has not come in from California yet.So I wait.
  Thanks guys Shiny Mike
