How fast is too fast?

Bubbafunk32
I want to ride my 1975 CB750F on the interstate are these bikes made to handle 70-75 miles per hour for a sustained amount of time?
I talked to a guy that works on these for a living and he said they are pretty much bullet proof but I don't know if I should push 5100 rmp's for more then 20 mins.

Anyone ride there's on the interstate?

I don't think you should have any issues man. I don't know where you live and what the weather is like but I live in Ohio and it can get warm here 90-95*F some days in August and on thise days I don't take mine 74 cb750 on the interstate. I get worried it may over heat. That being said if the temp is under 90*F I run it 70-75mhp on a regular basis for about 20 -30 minutes at a time going to my brothers house and have never had any troulbe. My motor is stock with pods if that matters and seems to run fine before and after a run to my bros. I had it out last summer and road the Ohio turn pike from Toledo to Cleveland and back and all was good. Again I don't know what the temp is like where you live just be careful not to let her get to hot.

I live in Minnesota and it's been about 70-80 degrees all summer.

These motors are pretty damn tough but yeah over heating is the main concern

If you got it in good shape, you can do 120 all day long, no joke.

I don't know if that would be a good idea!  LOL!

But yeah it's in good shape. Running those kind of rpms on a 33 year old bike just seems scary

I took it out the other day and for the first time brought it up to the red line it didn't want to stop!
Scared the hell out of me! HAHAHAH!

Great looking bike you have there. I felt the same way when I bought my first cb740k some ten years ago. That feeling that of"it just can not be good to go that fast on a bike this old". But now that I am onto my fifth one and have never had one give up on me I am over it. I would still have all five today but you know how it is when some one puts enough cash in front of you it can be hard to turn them down. I know three of the new owners and they are all still on the road and no real repairs beyond normal maintanace. Two of the guys actually ride the interstate on them for work daily. They both have about ten minutes on the fast road each way but it is high speeds none the less.
Ride like the wind my friend,  she won't let you down.
One other thing, if you are going to ride at the speeds we are talking about please, please, please keep a eye on your tire preasures. I have had the 70mph blow out and it is no laughing matter. Just being safe(must be the father in me).
Good luck.

With proper maintenance, these bikes are virtually a reliable as any bike made today. Their reliability comes from their simplicity. (0 degrees is warm but just use some good synthetic oil or use 20-50 weight oil. If in doubt, oil coolers can still be found. Keep your ride in decent condition and you can go anywhere with little fear of trouble AND you can do it going 120 all day.
These bikes like their rpms.

I have an '81 and I have no problem at 75 mph. As long as you're moving and your oil maintenance is good you shouldn't have any problem running interstates even in 90° weather. Now you may not want to idle for long periods of time

I looked into this, and actually the national max. speed limit was 55mph set in 1973.
that doesn't mean these bikes are made for that speed though right?

They were made to be the fastest thing on two wheels, and attempt to dominate over the 2-strokes.  While the Kaw triple was a faster bike, the Honda was/is much more of a stable runner.  My DOHC rides like a dream at 80, but could be geared better for such.

That was a great video. Makes me love the bike even more. Only one problem: It got 3rd because it was a "boring ride"? Man... I don't know about you guys, but there's nothing boring about this bike to me. Maybe compared to a finicky old norton or triumph, yeah... but if your idea of excitement is riding a bike that breaks down on you at speed, then I'll pass.

for the record, I'd still gladly welcome a norton or triumph into my garage. ;)

I love all bikes just the same but I really like the fact that I can park my 33 year old bike next to a bunch of Harley's and everyone is checking mine out!

Doesn't that feel good, though? I get the guys who just stare at it and eventually ask you what year it is. And then there are always the old guys my age who, like me, had one similar back in the day. Sometimes we end up talking for 30 minutes during a routine gas stop. Fun times.

I wish!

Nope, that's not me at all.

In fact, I've only been out twice -- TWICE -- this season -- once when I got it out of storage and once when there was actually a bit of sun and I took the afternoon off.

I guess I should say "three times" -- the third was when I took the bike into the shop a coupla months ago . . . still waiting for parts  [and  ]
