How many teeth do I drop

FastCletus
I just counted my Cb 750F and it has 46 teeth on the rear.  When I am riding it sits at around 4500 at 55mph.  Is that normal?  I was thinking about dropping some teeth to get the rpm's down.  Question is how many do I go?  I was thinking 44, but I just saw one on ebay that was a 36.

I have a 1980 cb750F and when I started riding it I thought that was high also. I sort of like it in that range now. Cruising down the freeway just crack the throttle and toucan zip past traffic with ease because your in your powerband range. It is all preference though. I still manage to get 37-39 mpg.
Making Laps, Twisting the Throttle and Cruzz control, it just don't get any better!

1 in front is worth 3 in rear
I bumped 2 in front and running 70 at 5k,with only changing front(1 screw)easy to go back to any of the other 2 I still have.
Ya see what I did was buy 1T bigger test then another they were only 13 bucks well worth the test ,Now thinking of rear change ,BUT pretty much  I like what I have for all the riding (distance I do between 55m.p.h. - 70m.p.h.)
HEY,I can ride all day in the twistys staying in 3rd-4th , Go on up to 80m.p.h. and stay out of the red, second only needed if down to the switch back 25mph,before it was seemed more shifting(but I don't use breaks)

                                                         O.K. (yo making me hink)
Stock on mine is 14 front ,43 rear. went to a 15 front ,left rear at 43,THEN went to a 16 front ,43 rear,Every time the rear stayed the same amount of teeth 43.(new 630 chain)
Checked (Paul)The cover wont fit with 16T and 17T wont clear the cases, new there was more,His memo, lots better.Since my charging prob(2months)havn't even put that cover back on(stator wires easyer to see/test).
I went to check gears in extra box and seems I left on the 15T in front,Then remembered I thought it best for during winter since wetter N slicker out and not going out of town very far till Summer,Sorry.bout the miss.
But you go UP in front and Down in rear for  lower R.P.M.'s (better gas too)Easier on engine when holding for long periods of time like 30+min.
as said I'm at 5k at 70m.p.h.bigg diff in sound and fill, most of time I don't even go into 5th,but then I don't ride Interstate much at all.

If the person answering the question does not tell you what year their CB750 is, then all bets are off.

The 77-78 CB750's had a higher 4th and 5th gear in the transmission.

What year is your
Cb750???

EDIT>>>> The year of the persons bike giving the advice

For Example:
IF a person says such and such sprockets work on their bike it does not mean
it will work on your bike unless the bike is the early model or late model with
the same internal transmission ratios.

Also wheels and tire diameters can make a small difference.

Correct 1980 CB 750 F.  Looked all around and cant find a front sprocket that's any more than 18.  Looks like my only choice is to go down on rear.  Back to same question though is 2 teeth on rear sprocket enough?

2 teeth will not make a noticeable difference. Go at least 4-5 teeth.

OK Bought a 42 tooth.  We'll see what happens.  Felt like going down to a 40 would be too much

My 82 CB750F had a 46 tooth rear sprocket. The revs at 100kph (62mph) dropped from 5000 to 4200 after I fitted a 40 tooth rear sprocket. 1st gear is now like 2nd was, 4th is like 5th used to be. When I found I could easily start off uphil with the old gearing, I was happy to change to a 40 tooth.

Mahvelous, just Mahvelous!
After a rear tooth drop from 46 to 42, a new chain and a new front sprocket (18) I went for a ride today.  Bike runs great.  Dropped about 600 or so rpms.  with cruising at 55-60mph rpms are right around 4K.  Much smoother than before.  Bike still has nice pull, or enough pull for me.  Little bit gearing changes but still happy with it.
