How to get a title or find original owner? Help

Sean
I just bought a 1977 Honda CB750 Super Sport. The gentlemen told me he bought it from a girl in Flagstaff Arizona, they were her fathers whom passed away. She didnt have the title. I cant find any records on the VIN, because its not 17 digits. How do I go about getting a title?

I have restored numerous cars, this is my first motorcycle.

I'd appreciate any help or advice. Thanks

this is what i did in Oregon and was succesfull:
1.The DMV looked up the last known registered owners.
2.i sent a DMV provided form to the person's adress on the DMV file. the form has to be sent certified mail.
3. either or PO fills the form out and mails it back to you OR: in my case the person had moved (or died) so the certified mail was returned to me un-opened.
4. i provided the DMV with the un-opened letter as proof that i tried to contact the PO, along with a few other DMV provided forms and they are all submitted to a "panel" that reviews the case.
5. 3 months later a title in my name comes in the mail.

it cost less than a hundred bucks in fees but boy i never will buy anything without a title again!
remember this is in oregon, but i still hope it helps

Each state is different. I would ask at my local DMV.

Can you please tell the forum members which state you live in when you ask these DMV questions?

I know in NY you can file for a "custom" build where you can be issued a new title however I am unsure of any other fine details
