I just said some dirty words

I know it was going to have to be done, but I kept putting it off. Then the other day it happened. The Toolmatic started to idle rough. I got home, and pulled the carbs off. disassembled them, and put them in cleaner to soak. I all ready had the carb kits, but needed the o-rings, for the fuel tubs. I just happened to find them (they are 6mm X 10mm X 2 mm.)
After soaking the carbs. I checked the passages, for the accelerator pump. Sure enough clogged. I got out my big cookie sheet, my pin vise, and drill bits. I sat down in the living room, and went to work. i took my pick, and made dimples in both of the little plastic plugs. Then I selected the perfect sized bit, for a no2 sheet metal screw. I carefully drilled the holes in the plastic plugs, and inserted the screws. After a little wiggling I had them out. I was very careful, and caught both springs (about 1/4 inch long by 1/8 inch wide.) I dug out the little balls, and rolled them on sandpaper until they were shinny. I then cleaned out the ports, and seats. Good, so far.
Then I went to put them back together. I dropped the little ball down into the port in the float bowel. then attached the spring to the little plastic plug, and inserted it. Good, so far. Now for the one in the accelerator pump cover. Dropped in the little ball. Then went to attache the spring to the plastic plug. Now this is where the dirty words came in. The little spring went flying. I crawled around on the floor with a magnet, and a flash light, for an hour.
Finely gave up, and took one out of the set of carbs I was going to use on the Bob-a-matic.

I can't top that one, but I can get pretty close.  I got a left side control harness for the new Avenger, as I didn't have a proper horn button.  There's a pin that holds the button/contact on the side, a small rather stout spring, and a VERY small circlip to retain the pin.  I'm talking about as small as the end of a felt tip pen. When changing it out, I did drop the spring, which I found, but didn't drop the circlip.

I've heard about some guys who cover work benches in white markerboard, so they can outline the parts as they disassemble them.  It's not very expensive stuff, wipes down easily, and is white so non-white parts should show up pretty well.  Might be worth a shot.

TOOLS, I know that other spring will show up 6 months down the road.  You'll either stab yourself in the toe with it, or the dog/cat will swallow it, process it in their own unique way, and leave it for you where you least expect it.

Bottom line: Did you get the carbs working?

Ah good times! In the control housings for the headlight and signal light switched, there are tiny springs and little balls. Lets just say that one of my switches is riding on the spring right now as a ball the size of a pen tip is hard to find!
OH what I REALLY love is when trying to screw in a bolt and it drops and rolls to the other side of the bike, JUST out of reach.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

That spring WILL NOT show up in six months. Haven't you ever lost something? It's going to show up an hour after he replaces it! At least that's what happens to me. For example of my luck... I was installing a basin sink in my laundry room the other day. One I bought didn't fit. So I went to Lowes to by a jig saw. I was sure to buy one that came with a blade. Got home and wouldn't ya know, no blade! Back to Lowes I went and bought 6 blades. Got home and as I was installing the blade I found that the jigsaw had a swing door to hold extra blades. Guess what I found in it?

I lost about an hour, and a half taking a spring out of another carb, so i did not have time yet to reassemble all the carbs yet. i hope to get it done to night. Am still going to have to get a spring, for the carb I robbed it out of.

Well the carbs are back together.  I only lost two springs (the other was, for the accelerator pump linkage,) and two screws. One that mounts the carbs to the rack, and one, for the choke butterflies. Now, for a beer, or two Tomorrow I will find out if the Toolmatic will ever run again
