I'm back

dave Esch
Hey all. After my catastrophic engine and self failure I've finally mustered the gumption to try this again. I found a head for my bike out in Minnesota. The company wants $120 shipped. I just can't pass it up. So hopefully by spring she'll be screaming down the street pissing off pedestrians again! Wish me Luck!!!!

I think we went through this Pat. If I remember correctly the head you have is for a super sport. I have a K bike. Besides I'd be pulling the head apart anyway. All the parts I have are in great shape. Any head I get will have seals replaced, valves lapped etc. Is this what you mean by "needs rebuilt"?

Re: I'm back

I took my motor to yet another master welder today. He was confident he could repair the crack in the head. But he, too, was reluctant to do the job with the head fully assembled due to the amount of heat that would transfer to the valve seals. BUT!!!! He is also the third qualified person I have spoke with that said the best way to fix it is using J.B. Weld. Since the crack is so small. I'm not a fan of the stuff personally. I want this fixed right. On the other hand, If I have it welded, $75, then I have to replace the seals and head gasket. If I buy another I have to rebuild it and replace all the seals and gasket. This head IS rebuilt, with only about 1/10th of a mile on it. So, if J.B. Weld fails, I only lose a couple days labor. So I am going for it. I cut the crack nice and wide, gave myself a nice, rough surface with the handy dandy dremel and packed her good. Tomorrow I will grind it all down and verify my cam lobe clearance. After seeing the repair, I must say my confidence is high. Now to put it all back together.

I used JB Weld to fix a crack in a carb intake on the Virago I used to have.  Did it as a temp fix until I could afford a new carb.  My biggest worry was that it would come out and go through the card and block something.  Ended up working so well I never changed it out.  Hope it works for you.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

Well I got the motor put back together this morning. Got it all put back together about 5pm. Unfortunately the battery I got doesn't fit. But I hooked up jumper cables and, after sitting for almost two years, she fired on all 4 cylinders straight away. This may seem like a no-big-deal outcome, except this bike has NEVER fired on all four at start-up since I bought it four years ago. It ALWAYS misses on one cylinder until it gets warm. Throttle response is great and she sounds alive and pissed off. Just the way I like it. Can't wait to get the right battery so I can take her for a spin.
