I'm bored....

Ghost-Flame
... anybody else?

I am at that place where I can't get the Mojo up to start prepping my frame, wheels and forks for powder coating... I sent the motor out 2 weeks ago to be re-manufactured, polished and flumexalgated. I also dropped my seat off at the upholstererator to be rebuilt in two tone leather like upholsteration.

I am feeling guilty about the money I am committed to spending on those 2 things and a lot of small seals bearings etc etc. close to $4000...gulp,,,, That's making me feel like I should hold off on anything else for awhile. Right now I hate the project! that feeling is turning me sour on the whole project. I know a guy that builds custom retro mod cars, he says he feels that way every time he does a project. He says when that sets in to let it sit until you get a jolt of inspiration again. sometimes that's a month for him sometimes it's a year or more... One thing he says is don't rush it. cutting corners is bad for the project.

Any one else get like that?

I have never had money to throw at anything like that, so I just don't understand your problem.

No problem. Just whining. You make my point with your question. I need a shrink... where's the couch?  And I was wondering if this has ever happened to any one else in the middle of a project.

When you go to prep the frame use paint striper for epoxy. It is the real deal .
Paint scraper wire brush and snacks and music.
If the can says paint and varnish remover it is very weak and worthless.

That engine rebuild is really worth while.
It takes lots of tools to do it right.
Then you know what you have.
And sourcing all those parts is a big job.
All the parts have to be cleaned spotless.
They all need inspection and possible measuring.
The crank bearings have to be measured and fitted.
All the 30 year old bolts and screws need replacement.
The clutch needs rebuilding.
The starter clutch should be checked.
It needs a complete valve job including many parts.
It has to be assembled correctly or it will be getting taken apart again.
Then it needs to be started up and checked for leaks and timing checked.

When you think about the money, think about what you get for the money.

I got burned out on drag racing. I love the sport and the thrill it brings, but it demands a lot of time. So I decided to try a change of pace. Motorcycles. A CB750 fell in my lap and 1 year later I have 1 on the road,1 very close to rideable and one in the works. If something bores me or I am no longer passionate about it-I change gears. Before drag racing I used to dunk trucks in the mud for fun. I got tired of that after one too many snapped axles. Dirt bikes before that, then 4 wheelers. I worked towards competitive shooting one time, but lost interest real quick in that-too much sitting around and nothing to 'build? I'll never make a job out of a hobby. I knew guys who raced because they thought it would make them seem cool, rather than because they actually wanted to. They were miserable. I've never hit a slump.Dont sit still long enough. It whatever I'm doing stops making my blood run-I find something that does.

If you want it ,build it. If you change your mind during the build,so be it-build it different. Maybe you should just step away from it for a while.Better yet,go to a bike show. When you see all the other gleaming machines you'll be inspired to get back on your project! Either way-just do whatever makes you enjoy life. Everything else is a complete waste of your time-regardless of what others may think.

That's some nice bike Gunslinger.

All good advice and insight. The advice to step away for awhile is what I'm doing. I have another bike to ride so this is all about the build. Since I have the seat and the engine out to be worked, I need to let my budget catch up  to the project.
The advice about the engine rebuild is well taken. Every ring, seal, gaskedt, nuts, bolts and washer will be replaced
It will all get measured and milled. Valve job. And polished. I can't wait to get it back.

I am going to give the epoxy striiper a try. What brand.

Re: I'm bored....

after reading my post im kinda ashamed, embarassed. ive got a beautiful  bad ash macihine out side and im lettin it sit there... it, or she as i like to call her. she has her problems, but everything is there. what more could i ask from a motorcycle. its everything i wanted when i first started looking at bikes. well i got of my ash today. started her up with a few twists of the wrist and one kick. i love the way it shakes the carport. it stil makes the hairs on my neck stand up.i took of the front sprocket cover( the one with only two screws) and could see that the front sprocket is worn. the teeth kinda look like a saw blade. not really but thats the way its starting to look. the rear sprocket looks good. im not for sure how to check the chain. im sure one bad sprocket will ruin the chain, the the other sprocket. took her around the block a few times, shook the neighbors windows real good. i now have my thinkn cap back on and want to make her better. anybody wanna give me a ball park estimate on the cost of new sprockets and a chain. is this somethin for a carport mechanic or should i fork out the money and have it done by someone who knows? and uhh, thanks again to tools for the centerstand assembly. i see now that the exhaust has to come off to put it on. i think it looks better as it is, just need the centerstand for maintenance.

  Hey Wes,
I think the word is that by going with 520 gears (smaller by the way and less torx tolerance...over time..) then most ,sure is newer but so is stk.,I'd suggest 530 and depending on what you wont for your comfort zone(speed your at 80% of time)mine is 70ish so still working on my touring gear ratio (trailer)BIGG diff then most.
I'd say close to a yard (100 bucks) for a set get a well rep. name don't go cheap you'll pay for more in long run(reason I stay with 630 on my gear). This is an area you don't go cheap, being stuck 100's of miles from home with no chain  and them not being at any auto parts store.

Atta boy Wes Sprockets and a chain are something you can yourself very easily. Using a 530 chain is the way to go IMO. No need to run a bigger chain ( pure mass) if you dont need it. You can get 530 chains rated all the way up to 1,100 lbs tensile strength. Somewhere around a 9,500 lb is good for these bike. If you order a chain make sure to specify a clip style master link. They can go on with no special tools. A rivet on link will require a tool that costs around $100.

I just bought this stuff the other day.Looking at my ticket now:

18 tooth- $23
48 tooth- $42
530 9,800 lb 0-ring 130 links-$110

130 links is alot.Your bike will probably use about 100-106 links and cost much less.
