I am trying to install UBUNTU on my buddies HP mini, and it will not let me install/run it. I am trying to install it from a CD, and have tried the notebook edition, and 11.10. Help.

No I did not have any idea about that. Will it make a difference over a CD? I know it loaded, but it will not run. It just says "the file is corrupted"

Restart the computer and keep hittin f8 until a menu pops up and select boot from cd. That might do it.

I did not try it with the F-8,but the UBUNTU menu gave me the option of booting from the CD, and I tried that.

With electronic devices, I usually find that if I bang it against the wall for a while I either fix it or end up getting a new one that does work. Either way, I get what I want.

It's possible that if you downloaded the copy of Ubuntu, it IS actually corrupted. My brother downloaded it three times before he got a workable copy. I guess because he's on satellite internet a few data packets got "lost" during the download! LOL Anyway, on his third download he finally got a copy that would load.

Could also be a hard drive issue. Maybe check to see if there are bad sectors on the hard drive? Did you use fdisk to repartition?

I know this is a shot in the dark, but can you boot Ubuntu from the CD?
If so, it may be possible to copy the OS onto the hard drive. Either Google or the Ubuntu website may be your friend. It's not difficult to install Ubuntu, but for a firsttimer it can be a bit complicated.
I can't help much, as I am traveling this week, but if I get time to search for it, I'll PM you with some help.

I was trying to boot from the CD. I have installed it on 3 other computers before with out any problems. This one will just not cooperate. I have tried to go to the UBUNTU web sites, but I do not understand the lingo. I just want to know which button to push.

So it won't even boot from the CD. Weird. As long as there is enough memory on the computer, it should run from RAM.
Boot the mini normally and see how much memory you have. Most modern linux packages will run on less than 1 GB of memory.

If all else fails, admit your newbieness on the ubuntu forum, and beg for help. :-)

Ok first thing you need is to make sure the laptop is set to boot from CD. Most of the time they are already set that way but to check you will start with the computer off, power it on, then tap the F10 repeatedly.
After about 15 seconds you should see a mostly blue screen, this is the BIOS. It will probably have a pop up asking if you would like to save to CMOS and exit, if so just type N for no and hit enter.
Now that your in BIOS you will have to use your arrow keys to navigate as the mouse does not work in BIOS. Arrow over/down (depends on the BIOS) to "Advanced BIOS features" press enter when its highlighted. In the advanced BIOS menu there should be something to the effect of First Boot device or Boot order, just set the first boot device to CD ROM.
Hit F10 and that message will pop up asking if you want to save to CMOS and exit. This time type a Y for yes and press enter. The laptop will reboot and if you have the Ubuntu cd in the drive it should boot from it. Edit: sometimes it will have a message pop up saying something like "press any key to boot from CD....." and if you don't hit a key within 10 seconds or so it will boot to its next boot device.
Now from here it will depend on if you have a "Live" cd or just an install cd. A live CD will load the OS into a RAM disk and boot into Ubuntu. From there you can choose to install it or try it out. If its just an install disk it will take you through the install process.
Edit: Also are you going to be duel booting windows and ubuntu or just ubuntu?
and here is a link to the live cd, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download, if this boots into Ubuntu then all your settings are right and you just need to hit install. There are also instructions for everything on that page as well, making a CD or a Bootable flash drive, ect.

Samir I am trying to install UBUNTU as the only operating system. It is a HP mine with Windows XP, and it sucks! I have a Dell mini with UBUNTU on it, and I love it! Turned a really suckey computer into a really good one.

OK then you know what to do so I think the ISO just got fubar when it was burned. Just burn another disk and see if it boots.
Also if you want to test the ISO you downloaded, you can see if a virtual box will run it. Here is the one I have its free and very stable. https://www.virtualbox.org/
