THANK YOU SIR. YES THEY ARE ORIGINAL AND THE OUTER INSULATION IS CRACKED AND SPLIT! I THINK I,LL TRY CUTTING OFF A LITTLE OFF THE ENDS AND RE ATTACH THE PLUG CAPS. I JUST READ ABOUT TEST ING THE COIL WIRE BY PULLING OFF THE PLUG CAP AND HOLDING THE END 1/8 " away and check for spark? would you concur?   thanks chris.

Firing the coil in open air, meaning disconnected from the plug, you should have about 3/8 of an inch of spark at the end of the wire to ground.

Well IMO, get new coils. Your old coils CAN be repaired but it is not easy. Depending on how beat up your wires are, you would probably have to replace them. Yes it can be done but it is not easy. You have to remove the wires from the coil. This involves cutting them out of the coil and cleaning out all its crap. Then you need to get new copper core wire and strip one end and shove it in the coil being careful to make connection and then epoxy the wire in place.

I have not done this but have heard of people doing it, there are people that feel the overwhelming desire to keep everything stock, even parts you cant see!

Now any coil that is 5ohm and dual lead will work. So there are a some aftermarket options. You will need to fab up a brace to mount them but they are usually smaller these days.

Partsnmore.com has coils for like $30 each. If you have a dyna S ignition, maybe use this time to get the 5 ohm dyna coils?
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

You coils and leads are one unit so its safe to say your coils are shot. I think its a waste to tear them apart to replace the leads on 30 year old technology. Its best to replace coils and wires, especially since you ride yours and don't store it. There are numerous aftermarket and plenty of originals on e-bay out there to find. I believe in more so I went with Dyna coils. They provide a much bigger bite, so when you "open fire" and they get you. "OUCH".
