INSTALLING PISTONS

RodneyCB750K1979
I'm about ready to install the pistons on my 79 DOHC rebuild.  Do I need a ring compressor(s) to install the pistons or can I squeeze the rings with my fingers alternatively as they need to go into their bores?  I think I'll need another body to hold the jug while I work the rings.  Any preference on where the ring gaps should be lined with on the pistons? What about the timing chain? Does it need to be held in tension through all of this?   Any tricks or ideas would be appreciated.

Don't worry about the timing chain, just tie a wire to it so you can pull it up after the cylinders are on. Use some blocks of wood under the pistons to support them while putting the cylinders on. I use radiator hose clamps as ring compressors. As for the ring spacing there is a diagram in the factory service manual that can be downloaded from the home page here.
