Idle problem

This post was updated on .
Hello. I'm new to the forum. In the past few months I have read such useful information on here. I have a 1982 cb750k which I bought with the carbs out and misc pieces. Been working on it for a few months putting it back together. I cleaned the carbs and put them back on. Started it up and the rpms were at5 I adjusted the idle screw then it shut off. I tried all afternoon to get it between 1 and 2 rpms but its as if the idle screw didn't work and would either make it rev really high or it wasn't able to stay running. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Might not be a vacuum leak. On my v45 with cv carbs, a bad sync caused the idle to be sky high and I couldn't get it to drop at all. Once I got it bench synced right, idle was normal.

Granted it was a bank of V carbs but they work essentially the same.

I could have went into a lot of detail about probable causes, but since he said that he had had them off for cleaning, most likely it's a vacuum leak. And that is where I would start looking.

I'll start by searching for the vac leak first. I'll have to study up on the bench sync as well. Thank you.

He did say he cleaned them and as we know, that means taking things apart. I was throwing my experience out there as when it first happened, I thought leak too and it turns out it wasn't. My issue was very similar. Stupid carbs!

I removed and cleaned the fuel mixture screws, gaskets and replaced the air cut off diaphram.

I Tightened up the boots and sprayed carb cleaner to check for leaks, so far so good.  But I did have a prob with the throttle sticking but at the carb somewhere. There is also a knocking sound near the middle of the engine. I managed to take a video while it was idling somewhat ok. Any thoughts or suggestions, thanks.
