In corners, front wheel sways...

Beez
Hi guys, first time ever on something like this!

i have a 1980 Honda CB750 DOHC, she was pretty tired when i picked her up off a retired gentleman.
she is in good condition.

I am not a rookie to riding, but i cannot wrap my head around that on this particular bike, when im getting into a corner at speed (not necessarily "knee down") she starts to sway.

at first i thought my rear wheel was out of alignment, but it is correct.
my handlebars start to sway, im worried im going to lose control and right my baby off.

please assist me here!

Well, we should get a bit more info. How old is the front tire? Have you checked the wheel bearings and steering head bearings? Could be a number of things really. You should also check if the spokes are tight and the wheel is true. I would also give the rear swingarm bushings a check as  well, just to rule them out.

I had completely missed the fact that my front forks were completely drained of Fork oil!

No oil huh, do you know why? Also, IF I remember right, you should have air forks too. Do NOT use an air compressor to fill those. A hand pump should be used. Apparently the seals blow easy.

No fork oil will make the forks extremely soft, but it still shouldn't sway. Like Rerun mentioned, is your swingarm pivot healthy?

I am not sure about the swingarm to be honest! How would I check it?

I replaced the oil in the forks and it’s a bit better, but I am getting the sensation of swaying in the corner.

Well, a very unscientific method is to put the bike on the center stand, grab the rear tire and try to yank it back and forth. If it has any side-to-side, I would say the bushings are shot.

Agreed.

But with the wheel and shocks still connected it's very heavy and under tension, so kinda hard to check. It sounds like a lot, but once you're on the centerstand, it's only two bolts to loosen the shocks and one axle nut to drop the rear wheel.

Definitely disconnect the shocks. I might leave the wheel on for better leverage but I haven't had to do it to a dohc or a bike with a disk rear brake. So it could be easier without the wheel.

The DOHC bikes have really nice bronze bushings in the swing arms that are pretty much bullet proof. I would suspect the steering head bearings. When they are too tight, or going bad, they will make the front end feel like it is made of rubber.

We pretty much threw that out just as something to eliminate since it is such an easy thing to check. Also, you never know what some PO did to the bike. We've all been there!
