Installing luggage rack

MrDoctorProfessor
So I bought this luggage rack sissy bar combo off fellow forum-ite Barelycompetent.  It came off of his 81 750k, and I assume I would be able to attach it to my 82 750sc.  I dont know if Im just dumb or what, but I cannot figure out how to connect it.  Im starting to think that it actually wont fit.  Can anyone give me any pointers?

Link goes to pictures of the rack and a picture of my bike

What is that weird ugly futuristic looking thing mounted on your bike where that sissy bar/luggage rack is supposed to mount?

A faring on the back of your bike? What ever it is, it needs to go if you want to mount the luggage rack.

Most racks for the CB750 use the upper shock mount and the HS bar behind the seat to fasten in place. I don`t see either on your bike. Looks like you`re going to have to get creative.

The body work on the nighthawks is one of the major differences between the DOHC CB and nighthawk series.

You're going to have to get creative to mount that luggage rack.

If you can line up the backrest's tubes with the silver bar on the outside of your bike, you could drill appropriate holes into the bar on the bike, to bolt on the backrest.  It really depends on whether that silver bar, on your bike's seat, is strong metal!  If it is plastic, it won't support the backrest.  I would suggest rubber washers between the backrest, and the bar on the bike, to protect its finish; if you ever sell the bike without the backrest, a couple of holes are preferable, to holes with scratches...

Alternatively, you could use some aluminum bar stock, from a DIY store (aluminum is less expensive than steel, but not as strong, either; both should be available), and put holes into that, which match the bolts on the existing bar on the bike -- use some stand-off's to create a gap between it, and the bike's body (small diameter aluminum tubing can be cut to size as needed); attach the backrest tubing to the bar stock (stand-off's optional).  The bar stock can have its ends rounded, and it can be painted, to dress it up on the bike.  If you paint it black, the color will mask minor imperfections in the cutting/grinding of the bar stock.

Sometimes you just have to be creative...     Cheers!

That metal band is pretty thick stuff.  Im pretty sure with some longer bolts and maybe some bar stock, I should be able to mount the whole thing if I replace some of the existing bolts with longer bolts and some spacers.

As a side note, does anyone know if there is anyone who does make proper sissy bar or luggage racks for the nighthawk body styles?  I cant seem to find anything at all.
