Insurance Claim 79K - What's it worth? - Answer:$2300

This post was updated on .
My wife took a hammer to my bike. She broke the head light and tail light lenses, broke the mirrors, broke off the turn signals and broke the lenses. She broke the right side cover and dented the tank all over the right side. She knocked it of the center stand and bent the left side exhaust and broke the clutch leaver.

Luckily, I have comprehensive coverage on my insurance (it was only $19 a year extra) so I went a head and got the coverage. There's only a $50 deductible too.

Problem is, the insurance normally totals any vehicle if the repair costs exceeds 75% of the retail value. With no new parts available, and labor running 75-100 an hour, I'm sure they're going to total it. In which case I'd get a check for what ever it's worth and they'd scrap the bike or offer me the chance to "buy it back" with a salvage title and reduce my check by about 25%

So, my question is - how much is it worth? When I went through this with my Blazer a couple of years ago (my son lost control and rolled it), they used the prices of similar vehicles at dealers to come up with a value. There are not a lot of 1979 CB 750s sold lately. If any of you guys see any adds for 79-83 DOHCs can you send me a link? That way I'd have something to compare the insurance company's offer to.

I decided to grow a pair and told her last week that I'd be going on a trip the next weekend. I had Friday off and the weather was going to be good. So I split Friday morning and headed east through Kansas & Missouri. After I crossed the Missouri river, I thought it would be cool to cross the Mississippi river too, so I set my goal has Hannibal, Missouri and headed east on U.S.36. I had a great time tooling around the Great River Road and up to Quincy, IL. I planned on heading back Sunday, but there were storms on my route west so I decided to stay another day, that's when the trip turned to crap. My wife started texting and calling me non-stop until I turned the damn phone off.

The bike ran great! My spedo cable let ago about 20 miles into the trip, but I pressed on knowing that I like to stop every hour, so I wouldn't run out of gas and I knew that 5,000 RPM on my tach meant I was doing around 70. The bike didn't give me any other problems. I probably put around a 900 or 1000 miles on it. Looking forward to fixing it up again and riding every weekend I can!

Anyone have any stock turn signals, headlight or tail light lenses they'd like to sell? I also need a spedo cable. I have another tank and side cover and a set of mirrors. I've searched ebay and found everything I need but if anyone here has some parts they've taken off a DOHC doing a cafe conversion I'd rather help clear out their garage instead of some ebayer parting out yet another bike.

Word of warning: since you're involved in a legal proceeding you might want to avoid posting on the internet about it.  These things can be found and used against you by your (soon to be ex) wife's lawyers.

Rich,I really hate to hear all of this. Anything I can do to help I will do gladly. I dont know how much stuff interchanges between the SOHC parts I have in the for sale section and your bike. Check out the adds and if you see any lights or whatever that will work for you and you want, just say so. Make a list and I'll send it.Consider them yours.Free. Later-Best wishes

The insurance adjuster looked at the bike. Said it would be about $1500 to repair it. The insurance company is now doing a market analysis to try and come up with a value. I'll get a check for the market value, less the scrap value.

I found a nice tank and side covers on ebay. Also got the lights and another spedo cable. Only thing I'm missing is the rubber mount for the front right turn signal.
Turn signal mount
It wraps around the fork tube. I guess I could try some rubber cement and glue it back together.

Can you get a less blurred picture of the rubber mount? I have an '81 K and I am not sure if the signals are the same, I'd say you could have mine but 2 are broken, and I am not sure if yours will even match up to mine

The insurance adjuster called me yesterday. They valued the bike at $2300.00.

So it is not totaled. They'll be sending me a check for around $1500  (that was their estimate for parts and labor to repair it).

Since new parts aren't available, I'll go with used parts off ebay. I've got everything on order.

I'm glad it wasn't totaled because then I would have had to buy it back and it would have had a "salvage" title. Would have been a shame to tag it as a wreck for the rest of its life when the damage was only cosmetic.

That picture wasn't so great. I'd already shoved the bike into the corner of the garage when I thought to take a picture of the signal mount. I'll take another one this weekend when I have a chance to move it.  Thanks for checking. I've got the signals it's just the rubber mount that wraps around the fork tube below the headlight that's broken.

I'll add another 'horror story' to this thread.
A co-worker of mine was in a relationship with a rather vindictive woman.  Not uncommon for her to fly off and do something destructive to let him know she was not happy.  (rumor has it drugs were involved, but I cannot confirm or deny.)
Anyhow, with his own money, he special orders a brand new Camaro with special paint and options and stuff.  This is about $45 large US.
So, he's got it in his house, in the garage.  Drives it once in a while to keep the battery charged and stuff.

So, Monday night, they get into an argument, and he says, "I want you and your family out of this house when I get back on Friday."  So he goes out on his assignment, and comes back Friday afternoon.

They've taken sledgehammers, wooden boards, and scrapers to his Camaro.  I think the insurance guys counted over 200 dents in the sheet metal, all the interior slashed, all glass broken (including head and tail lights), and stab wounds in all 4 tires.

Needless to say, it was a total loss.  They came to take it away on a flatbed, and he got a check from insurance guys for $37K.  They said there was 20% depreciation when he drove it off the lot.  He argued a bit, but eventually settled.  They broke up permanently a few months afterward.  Turns out she was a bit of a pill freak, getting all manic and stuff.

Moral of the story: don't _never_ get a woman ticked off at you, especially if you have toys and tools in the same garage.

Moral of the story really is the first hint you get that the bitch is that crazy, get the hell out of there!

As for the rubber mounts, mine aren't rubber where it attaches to the forks, my turn signals have like rubber inserts in them and attach to a tab on a bracket that is attached to the triple tree. I really am not sure now if my mount will work for you then
