I'll have to wait until I'm in front of it before saying much else - it will be several months.  I'm not really smart enough to argue but it looks like this very heavy spring is about more than just end play in the cable.

Totally understandable – sometimes it takes getting hands-on again to really assess what’s going on. And you're absolutely right: a heavy spring can be doing more than managing end play – it might be involved in damping or maintaining cable tension under varying loads. Best to revisit with fresh eyes in a few months.
