Jug O-Rings

RodneyCB750K1979
Some parts diagrams show large o-rings around the base of the four cylinders.  Mine doesn't appear to have o-rings unless they are so old and deteriorated to see.  Comments?  This is a 1979 Honda CB750 L  DOHC.

I can't tell from the picture if they are there, or not, but there are supposed to be O-rings there. They are very skinny, have you tried cleaning the groove with a dental pick? That's how I remove them.

I tried prying with a very small screw driver and it doesn't look like rubber material.  The material is below the aluminum surface. My engine gasket kit did not have o-rings.

Many "kits" are missing parts. Very common.
Not sure what the "L" stands for but you can look
it up on the Bike Bandit webpage under OEM parts.

I ordered a set of 0-rings.  I decided to start digging and was able to verify there is an o-ring there and it was so dried and cracked, I had to dig it out in pieces.  Probably due to the age and heat and also exposure to paint remover and solvents.

I wanted to be sure an 0-ring was there before I screwed something up.  Thanks for everyone's help.

Do yourself a favor and get some orings on there. I screwed up on my rebuild and forgot to install them. Now I have a leaky engine. Not much but enough to really hack me off.

OMG. What a bummer.

I forgot to install a dowel pin on my clutch cover.  Should I remove the clutch cover with it's new gasket coated with sealant to install this dowel?  Not as bad as the jug o-rings.  Engine has to come out to fix that.

You know, you only put sealant on the cover side of a gasket, and never the case side. So since I'm sure you already knew this, and only put sealant on the cover side, go on, and remove it to install the dowel. However if, you forgot, and put sealant on both sides of the gasket, don't worry about it. Just hang onto the dowel in case you ever remove the cover again.

I agree with TOOLS1.  There are two dowel pins. I looked it up for you.

I learn something every day. I put sealant on both sides of the gasket to prevent leakage but see now the advantages of sealing one side only. With one dowel pin in place, the center pressure point shouldn't be too far off.

When you rebuild my CB450 Rodney, you need to document every single step. No mistakes with Honda's awesome race twin motor.
