I agree with Piute.  The Motorcycle course at my local college has probably saved me already from an accident.  Don't skimp on the safety stuff.

Same thing.  They will drill you on techniques that form the foundation of your riding skills.  It is a rock-solid beginning.  I took it when I was 16.  My Father, who had been riding/touring for over a decade at that time, learned a few techniques from me (I got them from the course!)...  After that, spend some time riding, to hone your skills, then you can begin looking for additional information.

Are you planning on doing some of the maintenance work yourself?  If so, be sure to download the FSM (Factory Service Manual) from the home page -- it's free!  If you feel the need, Clymer makes a good supplementary repair book, for not a lot of cash, off of Amazon.com, used.

For starters, it would be a very good idea to change out all of the fluids (Fork Oil/Dexron III/IV/V ATF, engine oil & filter, and brake fluid).  Tires should be checked:  if worn, dry-rotting, chewed up, replace them; if older than five years, replace them.  Best of luck!  Cheers!
