Lights getting EXTREMELY hot!???

slownugly007
I got my bike all wired back up....after almost a month! I kept procastinating and one thing led to another and here I am. But anyways, my problem is that I tested out all the lights and switches (thanks tools and bosco) and they're all functional and work great, but I noticed that all my lights get really hot. Like to the point where I think my lenses are going to melt on my turn signals??? It got late last night and to be honest I was tired of messing with it, so I figured I d take to the forums for some leadway. I also test a turn signal straight to the battery and it still heated up pretty good? The batterys pretty low, so Im not sure if this could cause a problem??? Any help would be appreciated...and I beat myself up for reinvinting the wheel with this wiring, shouldve just left it alone...but im learning so its not a total loss. Thanks guys!

As long as your not putting over 14 volts to them, you will be alright.

yea, i wasnt sure? It just seemed that they were getting way too hot and the batterys not fully charged and hasnt been charged or ran in at least a month. I guess I just need to get a voltmeter and double check. It seemed weird cuz I had the running lights on and tested the signals, for no more than 3-5 minutes, and I could feel the heat radiating off of them and they were too hot to touch. Wasnt sure if they were always like that and I never noticed? Is it possible to accidently up the voltage if the wirings not right? I tied all the green ground wires together and added another frame ground, which shows ok in one wiring diagram but doesnt show it in my clymers???

Lights do get hot. I have seen people get burned by them.

Re: Lights getting EXTREMELY hot!???

i think i got it figured out. the stock turn signals have a double filament bulb and three wires, one for turn signal, one for driving lights and the other is the ground. My aftermarket signals only have two wires and a single filament bulb. The aftermarket ones were only made to flash on (bright) and off, so when I had them hooked to the driving light wire the light was at full blast constantly. I hooked up the stockers and noticed the driving light was dimmer (lo beam of light bulb) and the turn signal flashed bright to dim....so I think the aftermarket ones just werent made to use for driving lights since they have only one brightness which is really bright, hence the reason they got so hot. Everything seems to be good now that i cut out the driving lights and just use them for turn signals...i know the driving light is just a safety option, but is there any other reason it might be bad to not have them? sorry for the novel lol

I changed my rear lights to double filament bulb ,It was / has it's own ground already (didn't have a rubber housing ) didn't use that Lil ground that is hooked to the stock filament.
