I am looking to purchase within 6 months for touring with my wife and dog.  Would like to get a 750/4, which type and year would be the best for this ?  John

Any of them really. However, If you go with the 74 year, change the front sprocket back to a 17 if it has not been already. You may want to stay away from the 77/78 F bikes as their gearing is set a little more for accel unless you do not mind the slight additional buzzyness. The 78K is a very good touring bike. The seat is nice and it is very stable.
Remember, any answer you get will be purely opinion.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Regearing is always an easy option.  I think the DOHC bikes ride WAY better, but I do like the SOHC's for their simplicity...especially when it comes to hop-ups.  The SOHC's are becoming very desireable.  The DOHC K's/C's are still a dime a dozen....F's not bad either.

I like my 81F for touring. I changed from an 18/46 to a 17/42. It loves the 70-80mph range
