My bike made a strange sound tonight

I had the ignition on tonight while testing my tail light which i just installed. The key switch was probably on for 10-15 minutes. When i was done with the tail light i went to cut the key off and the bike "snorted"!As if you had just barely bumped the starter button!I didnt hear the starter motor engage or make any other noises, but the engine did snort thru the tail pipe, like it tried to fire.Anyone ever run into this before?Am i riding Christine the motorcycle???

It's trying to tell, you to hurry up, and finish it. It wants to go.

Tell me about it!Im ready to go!Seriously though, this has me concerned. Is it possible that turning the switch off somehow pulsed the electronic ignition?I looked for pinched wires but everything looked good.Tried several times to make it do it again with no success

Probably. You might not be able to duplicate it though. You would need the crank to be in the precise same spot, and residual fuel in that cylinder.

A lot of engines stop at the exact same point most of the time, so I would not be surprised if it happens again, but if it bothers, you. Send the bike to me.
When I start the Toolmatic cold. I crank it then let off, for a few seconds. When I do it sounds like something frying in the exhaust. I keep hoping it's bacon, but I have yet to find it

Re: My bike made a strange sound tonight

I dont know what it is with me lately and jumping into old topics but your question interested me shiny. But, as I don't know sh!7 about points type ignition I asked my dad. Seeing how he was born around the same time the dinosaurs were kicking the bucket he has been around points ignition systems for a while.  He gave me the whole 9 yards on how this could be happening and im going to take a whack at retelling what I've tried to learn. However if this sounds like someone talking out their ass its probably because I am and didn't get it.

Side note its funny now that im older that I find myself thinking, I should have paid more attention to what my dad was saying, luckily I can still ask him.

So, to the point. With a 4 cyl engine your going to be leaving one cylinder somewhere on its compression stroke no matter what.  And with these bikes running off of 2 coils not 4 there is also a greater chance that the the coil hooked to that cylinder is being "charged" (it doesn't charge but I dont know what else to use) at any given point.  So you turn on your ignition for a few minutes and the coil starts to draw off the battery. Then when you kill the ignition it creates the same effect as the points opening, collapsing the magnetic field in the coil and bingo you get a spark lighting off whatever little reminants of fuel and air in that cylinder creating your snort.....

At least I think...  Im sure tools or someone with more experiance could chime in here and tell me im taking out my butt and please do if I am but, i think that may be whats causing this.

Samir, that is exactly what Tools and I were thinking, too.Only i have electronic ignition, but same thing really.Instead of the mechanical breaker switch(aka:points)it pulses(i think that is the word you were looking for) off a magnet. Thanks for the help!
