My bike shifts harder when its hot...

...when it cold everything feels as i think it should.Once i get some heat in the oil,it starts clunking kinda hard when i shift, nothing drastic. But when at a light or an intersection, waiting in neutral, when you go to put it into 1st it bangs kinda hard.I double checked to make sure the clutch is disengaging completely.it is.I didnt know if this was just nature of the beast on these old cb's,or an actual issue that i need to address.Maybe i need a thicker viscosity oil?

Mine always clunks pretty hard when I shift it into first. The first time I fired it up I was pretty surprised.
I should probably make sure my clutch is engaging all the way as well...

On both my CB and my Shadow, I shift into first as I'm coming up to the stop light/sign. If I do this, it goes into first very easily. If I go to neutral, no matter how long I hold the clutch in, it goes *CLUNK* when I shift into first.

Temperature doesn't matter with this behaviour. I have noticed that the Shadow shifts better after a long freeway run, and only a little less so when it's been cold.

Ditto Luke's response.  If I take it into neutral at a stop sign sometimes, when I think it's gone into first, it hasn't engaged properly and when I attempt to roar away, I stand still and over rev the engine, which is embarrassing to say the least.  For this reason, I usually get it into first on the approach and leave it there at the light.  Probably not so good for the clutch but less embarrassing.

HAha! I have done that on several occasions Peter! Thanks for the replies guys.Since it ONLY does it warm I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a viscosity issue.Sounds like its nature of the beast. Thanks guysMuch appreciated

If you're running a higher viscosity oil than Honda recommends (10W30 or 10W40 should work for most people in the States), that can lead to heavier shifting when warm.  I recall one episode of American Chopper where they had starting problems on one bike.  They ran straight 60 weight oil in that engine, and it was cold from sitting near the garage door overnight in the winter.  Naturally, that led to hard starting.  Once they put some 30 weight in there, it started fine.

It doesnt get harder to shift,it just clunks going from neutral to first when warm.Only slightly more 1st to 2nd.The others feel the same.Shifter lever effort is ok,i was just worried the clunk may be a sign of some sort of slack or maybe shifter fork out of adjustment,if there even is such a thing.
