Need some help guys...

750 newbie
This post may seem somewhat awkward but I don't know who else to ask.  My father has just recently passed away and while cleaning out his garage I came across his Honda CB750.  Problem is, I know nothing about this bike.  I am guessing it's a '73 or '74, but am not certain.  I have worked on bikes in the past and as of today have been thinking of re-building this one into a Cafe Racer style bike; but am starting to think I will be in over my head.  I was hoping you could kindly take a look at the pictures attached and let me know if I'm correct about the date.  I also keep reading about K_style CB750's?  What are those?

I included the VIN number and the number stamped on top of the crank case thinking that might help.

Any help you guys could provide would be amazing!

Thank you so much for your time.

It's a 1973 CB 750 K-4. Manufactured in Nov, 1973. You have a great bike there. that is one of the best platforms for building a cafe style bike. About all you will need to turn it into a cafe, is a set of clubman handle bars, and a cafe style seat. There are cafe seats for these bikes everywhere. e-bay, internet sites, and you might want to try the adds in the back of Motorcycle Classics magazine.

The exhaust has been chopped off pretty short...  I'd recommend extending those pipes to direct the super-hot gases safely away from your feet, undercarriage and rear tire.  Besides that, loud pipes risk our rights.  They really are not that wonderful at getting car driver's attention:  most of the sound goes backwards, to cars who you have already passed, so they are no longer a threat to you.  Loud pipes typically anger everybody within ear shot, and that is quite a long ways, and an awful lot of people.  Good luck with the project.  Cheers!

Great, thank you so much for your help!  I've heard it's a '73 because of the VIN date, and I've heard it's a '74 because of the VIN number.  Either way it's close.

I searched all day today to find the key to start it but couldn't, so I don't even know if it will start?

Is there a way to bypass the ignition, get a key, or replace the switch?

Again, thank you for you help.  I have a feeling I might be on here alot more often here soon...

Oh, sgtslag... I completely agree w/ your exhaust comment, I found the remaining pipes and mufflers today, if I get her running I'll make sure to put those back on...

You can hot wire it by running a wire from the positive battery terminal to the coil wire. then short across the starter relay to crank the engine, or kick start it. Any Honda dealer should be able to get you a key, or you can change the switch tasclassicmotorsports, com is a great place for parts.
As for the year of the bike. It could have been titled as a 74. Back then the year went with when it was sold not the date is was manufactured, but it is a K-4. That's the important thing.

Alright, thank you TOOLS.  So you're saying I do not need to have the key switch in the run position to kick-start it? I was thinking it was a safety feature...

Not if you run the jumper wire. You will be bypassing the switch. Just like when a thief hot wires a car. Just be sure to check the oil before doing this. You would hate to blow it up, for lack of oil
