New Guy!

TannerT
Hey guys I am new to this forum to not new to forums at all. I have used forums for a number of years for all sorts of things. I have found them to be very helpful and a good way to help out. Through relationships I made in Bimmerfest.com I was able to do a auto to manual transmission swap on my BMW 330Ci. So now I am here because I am picking up an 82 cb750 later this week. It needs some work and paint but it will make a good project for me. It needs the cars rebuilt which I have already called about and found I can get them rebuilt and re jetted for $400. My plan for the build is to lower the bike an inch or so nothing major. Replace the seat and rear fender with a one piece deal. Flat or super bike handle bars. Turn signal deletes and a different tail light. Not sure what I am going to do with wheels yet. Thinking a 4 to 1 open exhaust and maybe pod filters. I would really like to do a custom intake manifold I think that would be pretty cool to play with. I am probably going to paint it flat black when I get it done.

More info on the bike as I said it's an 82 cb750. It has 15k miles on the clock(not sure how far along in life that puts the motor.) it is a K which I gather means it is a dressed down simple version. Gas tank is dented so I will need to find a good used one or buy/fab a custom tank. It is also DOHC which I have heard is problematic with the carbs esp when tuning and doing pods. not a perfect bike but I am paying $700 for it.

About me: I am a student/employee at the University of Missouri College of engineering. My major is MAE which I plan to use in the aftermarket performance industry, if that fails I will search in aerospace. I am on the Formula SAE team. I live in Columbia, MO. I decided to go with an early 80's Honda because I love the way they look customized. My current DD is a  2003 BMW 330Ci I really need something that is more fuel efficient.

First questions: First carbs!! how bad are they really? will pods jack everything up? Is there a good aftermarket solution to them? Second how tuneable are these motors? will I see any increase with the intake/exhaust, what are the best ways to coax more power out? Fuel efficeny, what do you guys usually get mpg wise? Last question for now, is $700 a fair price for a bike that needs carb work and is in overall fix up to ride condition?

Thanks guys!

With a title $700.00 is not too bad if everything else is in good shape. For carbs the DOHC CV carbs do SUCK! when using pods. However for $800.00 Sudco has some high performance round slide carbs in a kit for the CB 750.

Re: New Guy!

Well I bought it for $650 last night! I will be sure to snap some pics. We drove to STL in the snow 3 hours last night to get it but I have great visions for her. First and foremost I am gonna need to lower this sucker. I am no shrimp at 5'10" 165lbs but it is still a bit tall for my liking. Works for my buddy who is a hair over 6' great though.

So what is the best way to lower these bad boys? looking at an inch of two. I mean I know lower the front forks and go hard tail(not my preference) or lower springs. I am not sure where to locate all of this stuff though.

Also I need a new tank the one It came with is dented. I have found 750 tanks for really cheap but I am not a super fan of how they look. Kinda digging the 900 tanks. How well do they fit?

If I may make a suggestion:

If the bike has all its parts (carbs, coils, tank, etc), I'd recommend getting the bike running first, before tearing into all the modifications you're talking about.  Doing this work now will get you familiar with how it comes apart, and give you a good baseline on the sounds and smells and performance of your bike.

$400 for carb cleaning?  Seems like a lot.  It's entirely possible to do it yourself for much less. A good carb kit, some cleaning product, and a few hours of bench time can get them in good serviceable shape.  Same for the tank: check it for rust, clean out the inside, then upgrade down the road.  I don't know if the CB900 tank will swap in without modifications.

You're 5'10".  I'm guessing you're long waisted and have a fairly short inseam.  I'm almost 6' with a 32" inseam, and straddling my old CB was done with a bit of tiptoe.  Lowering the front end is pretty easy.  It involves the triple trees.  Lowering the back end is probably a shock and spring swap.

I hope this helps.  Welcome to the forum, and we're here to help if we can.

Re: New Guy!

Thank you for your reply, I am going to do what you said and get it in tip top shape before fiddling. It is not a matter of me wanting to replace the tank but it is dented pretty bad. I will take some pics in the light tm. The $400 is not for just a clean and rebuild I can do that. It is for a full service(even refinishing) and re jetting to make sure it will run pods and exhaust okay. After it is running I am going to make it look decent and drive it for awhile to get the feel of it.

Stock carb set-up's usually get between 40-50 MPG.  There have been some recent threads on Pods.  Check through this forum's posts, in the past two weeks, for one by Shinyribs.  He comments on Pods, versus the stock air box, I believe it was on a DOHC model.

Using the stock air box, a K&N Permanent Air Filter (~$50) supposedly increases everything (mileage, HP, torque, etc.) by a whopping 3%.  They're nice with regards to maintenance, though.  Cheers!

CycleX say that they can jet your DOHC to run well with pods and different exhaust?  Do you need to bring the whole bike in to them to get it done?

Re: New Guy!

Interesting, is this listed on their site?

I ask because the DOHC CV carbs are notoriously difficult to tune with pods on.  Many people say it simply can't be done.  People that do say it is possible say that there is no magic formula, and much will depend on your altitude, your specific engine and your exhaust.

I just don't know how they could do it without having the whole bike there.  I'm curious if anyone has had it done and has had a positive experience.

I honestly couldn't tell ya man sorry. I called cycleX and they guy told me this. He said they rebuild the unit down to resurfaceing. He said they re jet them and do some other modifications the eliminate the need for the vacuum the stock box provides. I am new to carved bikes so sorry I can't help. I learn very fast and as an engineer am always tinkering so I should be able to answer soon!
