New member and need some help please!

Centurion
Hello all,

I am a new member and hoping you guys can help me with a problem with a bike I just bought. I have a 1975 CB750F super sport. The previous owner said the bike tries to start itself while its running. So when I got it home I put a new battery on it because the one in it was dead. Tried to start it up to see what the hell would happen and it cranked over and smoke starting coming out from under the tank. So I took the tank off and found a solid green wire melted. traced it back to a conjusction where the green wire branches off. looks like they branch off to the rectifier, regulator, a/c Generator, tail lights, and headlight. The headlight bulb is blown and I'm entirely sure why but the bike will not start. Has anyone ever run into a problem like this before? I'm not really good with electronics and I want to ride this pig! Somebody help me please!!

Green wires are supposed to be grounds, so there is another wire shorting across to it, or they have been spliced into another circuit causing a short. Download the Factory Service Manual from the link at the top of the Home Page here, and start tracing wires using the wiring diagrams.

Okay thanks tools. I was thinking about getting a new harness for the bike. The melted wire is pretty bad and not sure if I should splice it or not to fix the wire. Would you happen to know what years are the same for the harness?

Thank you. Are there any common problems with this bike I should look out for in the future?
