New to the forum

ish_master
Hey all! I am new to the forum, but am not new to owning a 750. I bought an '81 CB750C seven years ago as my first bike - it was actually a lot of my friend's first bike, too. Anyhow, sadly enough, between two deployments, and storing it at different locations, it has fallen into a sad state of disrepair.

And so the fun part begins! As winter rapidly approaches I have rearranged my garage by putting the '08 Daytona away, and brought forth the Honda. Time for a winter project!

So with that being said, I'll dive right into my first few (of what I am sure will be hundreds) questions. I am planning on replacing the stock airbox with K&N Universal Round Straight Clamp-On Motorcycle Air Filters. I have measured out the flange ID, and I believe it came out to be right at 52mm. Does anybody with these have any input on the matter? Oh yes, I am also running the stock carbs. Another thing that I would like to find out is what the maximum length is that will fit under there with the airbox removed. K&N has three options for this: 4", 5", and 6"... I'd love to get the 6" under there, but I don't have the measurement... (Oh yes, as an important side note, that bike has been completely torn down already.) So, again, if anyone has any experience with this, I would love the feedback.

One more question and I'll be done. I am planning on getting the Accel Super Coil Kit. Does anyone out there know off the top of their head if I need to 0.7 Ohms or the 3.0 Ohms set?

I will take any thrashing that is rightly reserved for me if I missed something while I was trying to find the answers.

Thank you all very much for reading, and I look forward to contributing to this community!

-Shua

Welcome to the forum. Your '81 is a DOHC engine, running CV (constant vacuum) carburetors.

Re: pod filters.  Go to the home page and search for "pod filters".  You'll find a LOT of postings on that. While it IS possible to re-jet the carbs to support pod filters vs. the stock airbox, it's a LOT of work. The carbs are set up to expect a certain amount of vacuum, which the stock airbox is designed to provide.

Changing the amount of air entering the carbs needs to be balanced with the amount of restriction in the exhaust system, the jets in the carbs, mixture settings, and the lack of vacuum at the carb inlet.

Do the search, read as much as you can, and then determine if it's worth it.

I believe the stock coils measure about 5 ohms on the output side.  So, you can't go wrong with the 3 ohm Accel units.  The .5 ohms may present a larger current draw on the electrical system, which is not that robust to start with (no pun intended). This would be worse at low speed riding, as the charging system doesn't start generating good current until about 3000 rpm.

I hope this helps. The search window is your friend here.  Read as much as you can, then you can make an educated decision.

Welcome to the forum. Those CV carbs are a pain to run with pods, but it can be done. I think the 6" ones will fit. Another neat option, for coils is to use GM HEI coils. There is a thread her on it.

LukeM,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I guess I was searching for the wrong thing, because you are right, there is a TON of stuff about the pod filters, thank you for pointing me in the right direction with that.

I am aware of rejetting the carbs, and am looking forward to all of the hassle that that will provide. I guess that I have my heart set on the pods so much that I will to accept the ass pain...

Thank you for the info about the coils, it looks like it will be the 3Ohm for me... Hmm maybe upgrading the stator might allow me to install the .7's?

Anyhow, thanks for the response, I'm thinking about seeing if I can change it over to a kick-start later on down the road, I'll definitely have some questions about that...

Tools,

Thanks for the warm welcome also. I was pretty sure I'd get a response from you because of how active you are on here.

I definitely understand the pain that these pods are going to be, I'm planning on getting the 44 piece main jet kit from Vintage just to make sure I get the right jets... If they get them in stock anyhow...

Thanks for the measurement info, I'll probably go with the 6". I'll have to look into the GM HEI, I haven't seen anything about it and to be honest don't know anything about that particular setup. I'll be looking into most everything as the winters are long up here in Alaska...

cowboy and shinyribs,

Thanks for your welcomes and your support. And thank you, cowboy, for your service as well! (Side note, I hope you name isn't in reference to the cowgirls... GO EAGLES!)

shirnyribs,

Thanks for the input, as I understand there is just going to be a lot of trial and error involved with these, so it'll just take time...

no that was my nickname in basic cause i am from ohio and when they toke our street clothes away we had a couple of days in or street shoes before they toke us to the px to get running shoe's and of course i went to basic in wranglers and cowboy boots so the old school gray sweat pt's and cowboy boots was fun lol

and the name stuck with me on both deployments i went on cause of my shooting style and my 1sgt made sure everyone new i was the go to shooter with some of the shots i got away with that really required alot of ky wind calculations lol
