Newbie to honda needs help

idahobilly
Hello i just bought my first honda,cb750,1974. Bike is super clean but the previous owner put longer front fork tubes on it. I really hate this psuedo chopper look but he saved the original tubes which i want to reinstall. Fast forward, the honda dealer close to my town doesnt work on anything before 1990??? So im considering doing the job myself. My shade tree mechanix skills have included one auto engine rebuild and several engine rnr's and brake's etc. But i do not work on the computer fuel inject new stuff.Question? Are these forks under pressure and will a floor jack and hand tools be all that is required. Any thoughts and tricks will be most appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.  Others here will recommend downloading the Honda factory manual for your bike.  The detail is very good, and will give you a good idea of what's involved in going back to the original forks.

Here is the page: http://honda-cb750-s.456789.n3.nabble.com/NEW-Repair-manuals-4-5-2010-UPDATE-td685918.html#a685918

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.  I'm sure you'll get some help here.

The forks are under pressure from the springs of course but thats it. Just put down your centerstand and jack the front end up. From there, just remove the nuts on the tops of the forks carefully and you should be ok.

As luke linked, get the manual and you should be golden.

Thanks I have the manual and although it does not look easy i think i can do it. Next question : Would the previous owner have to install longer than stock inner springs in the fork tubes because they were longer? Or will all internal parts fit back into my OEM tubes?

Hard to say. Only way to know is to open them up. The PO could have used longer springs, in which case you would have to get stock springs or they could have used the stock ones and put spacers in to take up the extra space.

Forks only have spring pressure and thats not much if you remove everything from bike work on a bench and if fluid is removed dont over fill or you can lock up a fork and would have to drain some fluid out,They dont take a lot of fluid you can use automatic trans fluid or buy fork fluid for hondas,In general its and easy swap your SERVICE MANUEL will tell you how to service forks.
