I got lucky when I did my change to synth. I did nothing. I drained well and put it in and never looked back.
When I drain, I do tank first, then filter, and then pan. After that, since I have a large pan, I leave it under but move it forward some and with the filter housing off, I hit the starter quickly a bit to pump out more oil.
If it is a motorcycle synth, clutch slip should be 0 but it has happened when people didnt get the engine clean and sludge got on the plates and caused slip.
Another option for cleaning is to dump in part of a can of seafoam and idle for a bit.
Vern's 4 steps should work good though.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
