Oil type and amount?

s2k006
What type of oil should I put in my 1979 cb750 dohc?
And how much?
There's really no mark on the dipstick that I can see.

Thanks,

Steve

Chilton's manual says 3.7 qts. 10w40. Start engine and  let run.Shut off and top off if needed.Set threads of dipstick in opening should be top and bottom marks on stick.

Thanks,

Now when you say top off, do you mean fill it to just below the inner threads (female)?

No, the threaded oil cap should have a dipstick molded on the bottom of it. Sounds as if yours is broken off.

Yeah I see it now.
I way over filled it.
What an idiot.
At least I didnt take it on the street like that.
Hope I didnt do any damage.
Definitely noticed a difference in the clutch operation.
Well it needed an oil change anyway.

Thanks, Steve

Do the dohc bikes need the same oil as the sohc bikes?I know certain oils can mess up the clutches if used.I've been told that Rotella T oil is fine for the clutches

I know a lot of guys swear, by the Rotella T oil. However the high amount of detergent in it scares me. It is hard on aluminum. I used to work, for a farmer, and he ran Rotella T in every thing. His John Deer riding mower was dead, and burning oil in one summer, and his pickup, and van were both burning oil in 60,000 miles. However they were Chevy/GMC. I have torn down a lot of engines, and the cleanest ones were always running Havoline. That's what I always use. Change every 3000 miles. Put 375,000 miles on my last truck. Engine did not use any oil, and was clean as new inside. Only let the truck go because the trans was starting to slip. Did not want to spend $1,900 on a $2,000 truck.

I did not know that about aluminum. My 2001 Duramax has 235,000 miles and i have always used Rotella.Change the oil every 6,000 miles, because at 3,000 miles after oil change it still looks new.Takes 6,000 for it to darken. I use Mobil1 full syn ONLY in my race engines, haven't found any other thats cold flows as well and i leave the line at 140 water temp so i need that.
