Painting a tank?

Tonup76
I'm just about to start tearing down my bike to paint the tank and side covers.
Here's my question:
I'd like to remove the tank badges and side cover emblems and make them all smooth for some cool decals I'm ordering which I'll put on after painting and then clear coat over them.  Would regular "body filler" work for this?  I know tanks expand and contract a bit and want to make sure I use the right product.  I'd hate to do all that work just to have cracks show up after I paint.  Again, thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the tips.  This forum is great.

p.s. I never really got a response on my other post about what type of shocks some of you would recommend.

p.s.s. The bike is a 73 cb750 F

I painted my tank and used body filler for a couple of imperfections.  It has been 4 years and all still looks good.  I am currrently getting my tank ready for a color change repaint.  I will use a little more filler for some new small dings.  You should be ok with your tank.
