Pamco electronic ignition and coils

Peterwh
I recently fitted a Pamco ignition and coils that I got from VintageCB750.com on my 78 CB750K.  In a previous post I said I would put up some notes because, while not exactly difficult, the kit was not a simple fit up.

I started around 7pm and had the bike running by around 9pm.  I then had about an hours work another time to finish everything off and do the timing with a strobe light.

For a start, not everything you need is included in the kit.  You need a nut for the forward coil mounting bolt, which you can cannibalise from the coils you are removing, four quarter inch spade electrical connectors and a few bullet connectors.

The electronic ignition went together pretty smoothly.  Removing the old cam from the points plate and assembling everything was a bit fiddly but only because I have big fat fingers.

You have to read the wiring instructions pretty carefully.  I probably had to read them five times before I got it.  I think they were maybenwritten by someone for whom English was not their first Language.

The kit comes with four spacers for the coil mount, two rear, two forward.  The rear ones are fine.  For the forward mount, I had to cut one of them down until it was just over half the original length.  The forward coil mounting bolt (supplied) needs to go right through the bracket on the frame.  In my case the bracket was threaded for exactly the same thread as  the bolt, so I had to drill out the threads on the frame so the bolt would pass through.

On the electrical side, you have to make up little new harness with a few bits of wire and bullet connectors for the wires that combine with the wire from the kill switch and go to both of the top connections on the coils.  This is what extended the job over two days for me because I didn't have the required connectors.  Why they don't supply them beats me.  I used some bits of wire i clipped off the old coils but, of course, now I cannot sell them if I wanted to.

Other than the above, it was pretty straightforward.  You do have to make sure the right coil goes to the right pair of cylinders.  I got it wrong first time but when the motor wouldn't start, I just switched them over and it started straight away.  I would certainly recommend this kit if anyone wants to switch to a fairly simple electronic ignition.

Have you gotten a chance to ride the bike since you did this? I was wondering about any performance gains

Unfortunately, with the weather in Pittsburgh and a pretty heavy travel schedule, I've not.  It runs better and it feels smoother but a ride will be the acid test.

OH shit your in PGH. look I'm thinking about doing the same thing. But would like to get my engine running first. TELL ME you didn't clip the wires on the old coils flush to it. can I get them and rig it to work just so I can see the pig run, and check the compression etc. THis could work out perfect, I don't want to buy some coils just to do this, and I can't afford the pamco  kit yet. so you could really help me out man.
I'm in Dormont. you anywhere near there?

City slicker, I told you before, I'm in Sewickley.  You can have the coils I removed.  I think you should be able to fix them up.  Can you get to Sewickley or Wexford.

Shiny, I managed to get a ride today.  It felt smoother and it was certainly flying, but then it always does.  As far as a performance improvement is concerned, I'm not sure, it is hard to tell as I think any improvement would only be incremental anyway.  If anything, it sounded more like I remember them sounding back in 74 when they were new.
