Pods working?

Scrambler80
I just bought a junked 80 cb750 and I'm building it up to be a scrambler.  It didn't come with a regulator/rectifier so I ordered a used one online. I plugged it in and fired it up.  After a little while it hit against he CDI unit then it sparked and the CDI blew up.  The regulator/rectifier seemed to not have any visible damage to it so I just ordered a new CDI.  I plugged in the new CDI and ran it for a while then that one, without touching anything, exploded too. After that I checked alternator or whatever you want to call it and it was fine.  I then checked the regulator/rectifier and it was bad.  Is there anything that could have made that go bad or could it have just been from the CDI and that touching?

Them touching should not have hurt anything. The reg/rec must have been bad. However I cannot understand the CDI blowing up. There is not anything inside it that could explode. Unless maybe it was a Hollywood CDI.

It sparked out of the back and the smooth black surface on the back is cracked open.

So no loud bang, no shrapnel, or fire?

What was wrong with the reg/rec? Was it allowing to overcharge, or was it not rectifying?

I could see both causing the CDI to fizzle out.

Curious how pods factor in, though?
