Powerless '77 CB750

Hondadon
I was wandering if someone could help me with a problem I had today with my 1977 CB750. I bought this bike 5 days ago, nice shape with 26,000 miles on it. I was riding today, and was going to make a right hand turn at the next intersection. I turned my blinker light on, it beeped three times and everything shut off. No lights, no power, no nothin'! I'm not familiar with this bike yet to know where the main fuse is located, but from what I have read, it is behind the left side cover. Could this be a blown fuse or something else? If it is a blown fuse, what would cause it to blow and why have I ridden all week and not have any problems? I would appreciate any info and advice from others whom have experienced such problems in the past. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place. The fuse blocks on these bikes are junk! The connections on the back side of them are weak, and will not carry the amps. this causes the fuses to over heat, and blow. to cure this. Just replace the fuse block, by cutting the wires off at the back, and then wire in 3 blade type fuse holders. These can be obtained at any auto parts store, and even Wal-mart has them. Then on the main instead of using a fuse, use a 15 amp circuit breaker. that way if something does trip it; all, you need to do is turn off the switch, for a few seconds, and it will reset.

Thanks TOOLS1 for the info. Turned out that the trouble was with the 15 Amp fuse, but it wasn't blown. Just years of fatigue and vibration must have caused some sort of break down inside the fuse itself. Put in a new 15 Amp fuse and it came alive....no more problems. Your idea of putting in new individual fuses sounds like the way to go. That may be a winter time project for the future. Thanks again!

Yeah as these bikes age, those buss fuse blocks corrode and weird things happen. Mike is still good but I have cleaned the contacts. Some time I will replace them but I am saving up to do a partial refresh since my head gasket is starting to go.

What is the problem with the head gasket? If it is oil leaking from the fins it is the nut covers under the camshaft.

It could be those. I honestly have not looked that closely yet. I kinda want to refresh and yet dont. It would be my first engine I have torn apart like this, besides a briggs! I doubt it is too hard but finding parts is a serious pain as you well know with having an A.

There is a guy on e-bay selling Athena gasket sets, for $50.00, and vintage has the rings. I would run a compression check before tearing it apart. The head bolt covers are about $8.00 a set.

Parts for the CB750 engine are not hard to get.
The more parts you order the more that will be available.

You know how these businesses are these days... If they do not sell
the item within a few days they take it off the shelf.

One day I bought a box knife and a week later i went back to get more blades and
I could not find them.
The clerk (associate), told me they did not carry the blades for my cutter anymore.
I said can't you request to get more blades and the clerk said,"no only the corporate office
people decide what gets ordered."   I said OK give me my money back for the knife.
Then it got ugly.LOL Idiots.

that works if things are in bulk and demand.
Try finding 1 source for in and ex valves, keepers, springs, guides, seals, ect.
I have yet to find 1 source for all of these. Keepers are especially hard to find for the 77/78 engines.

Well, luke, I just had to let you down I guess! Gotta keep the expectations realistic!

I am sure it wont be to hard though.
