Rebuilding a motor? Good read!

rrgunslinger
This is a good read for someone who is going to attempt to rebuild a motor for the first time or maybe anytime.

Is it common to get the head and ports glass beaded?  Reading all of this makes me second guess doing a top end job until I really need to.

It is common, but not necessary. Although most machine shops include it in with the valve job.

Awesome link! Thanks Harvey

Glass beading is just a faster, easier way to clean the head for the machinist versus using solvents. It sounds exotic to some,so some shops will charge accordingly. If you are a machinist rebuilding a head then the task of cleaning it is on you. It's just something you gotta do so why charge the customer for it? Its more or less just bragging rights for the customer, though.Either it was cleaned or it wasnt. How doesnt really matter much. Glass beading aluminum does leave a very nice smooth finish, though. As long as the glass bead is still fairly healthy and not just a hopper full of shards. I would do it if I had the chance, but I wouldn't pat any extra for it.
