Reinstalling cam exhaust chain and sprocket - help needed

lusciouslemur
Hello all.
Got a 1980 cb750c.

Essentially I'm in the middle of putting the cam shafts back in place, but there seems to be absolutely no slack on the chain to make this possible. I can either get the chain on the sprocket or attach the sprocket to the shaft, but not both. I've tried getting as much as I can out of the rear tensioner. Am I missing something, should it be this hard?

There is not much slack in the chain to start with, so it can be troublesome. Are you putting the chain on the sprocket and then putting the sprocket on the cam? If you install the sprocket on the cam first, you will never get the chain on.

Chain on sprocket first. It looks like there's a lip in front of where you bolt the sprocket on, having trouble getting it close enough to start putting the bolts in.

It should slide up on that lip.

I had a the same problem recently on my 1982 DOHC. I was able to feed the camshaft through the sprocket, then fit the chain and lastly fit the bolts. Hope this works for you.

Are you reusing a preexisting chain, or installing a new one? If new, verify the length/pitch of the chain is correct.

Same chain. I don't know how it was on there to begin with because even with the tensioner slackened out there's no way I'm able to get the sprocket on there.

Well, for whatever reason I got it on by installing the sprocket first and yanking the heck out if the tensioner first. Thanks all for the advice!
