Rusty fuel tank

beemerboy
Has anyone used "Klean-Strip Etch and Prep" from Home Depot to clean rust from a fuel tank? I have read that it removes all rust and leaves a grey phosphate coating in the tank. My 1971 CB 750 tank has been empty for years yet I can see some rust on the very bottom inside. I've some good results on smaller parts with pure vinegar.

Never used it, but would be interested in the results if you try it.

What is the product initially designed to "prep" for? Home improvement stores typically don't carry any products actually intended for metal working. Only reason I mention it, if it's designed to etch and prime concrete floors ( just a hunch) I'd be curious how the remaining surface would react/ hold up against fuel.

Haven't tried it yet. The reviews seem positive for metal work.  http://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-Strip-1-gal-Phosphoric-Prep-and-Etch-GKPA30220/100406369

I used it as a final step in cleaning out an airhead tank I bought last fall. It's phosphoric acid which is what's in naval jelly. Tank is clean, but see as I have 0 miles on my beemer I cant say how it holds up to gas. Supposed to be like a stomach lining for a tank that you recoat each year as part of yearly maintenance.

Did you use it full strength or if diluted, how much? Do you have to repeat the process yearly?

Poured the whole gallon in (not diluted), corked the bungs and rotated the tank. Then drained back into same container. This is to be done as part of yearly maintenance when you clean the tank (if you clean your tank that is)

Then again that was a fine German tank von eine motrrad von Bayrische Motoren Werke. Feine Deutsches arbeit gemacht. Thanks for the information. As you can see from my "handle" I too share an enthusiasm for the products from Munich

I bought a pair of airheads (76 R90/6, 77 R100RS) that had been sleeping for over twenty years and am slowly figuring out how to wake them up. Quickly found out they are slightly more complicated then my Honda. But I like them more everyday. Just got to drive the /6 around my neighborhood last week. Still need to lube the splines and dial in the timing. Can't wait to take a long trip on one of them.

I am green with envy. Beautiful machines. I have a '97 K1100LT and a 2002 R1150RT. The K bike is at 99K miles. A fork seal went belly up. The only repair so far.

I've been helping a buddy work on some older BMW's lately. It's kinda amazing how small the subframe tubing is on those bikes! Do either of your bikes have the master cylinder under the fuel tank? Ugh, whatta design... Also, on two of these bikes we've had to mill the valve cover gasket faces to true them. The heads measured flat, but each bike had 1 warped valvecover. Is that somewhat common?

My bikes are of newer generations. The K1100 is a 4cylinder, 4 valve, twin cam water cooled motor laying in its side. The head is on the left and the crank and driveline on the right. It is fast. Some say its not a "real" BMW. The R bike is an opposed twin, air and oil cooled. Both have master cylinders in the usual place on the handlebar. As to what you are finding, I asked around. Yes, the warped valve covers are not common, nor unheard of. The under the tank master location seems to not be much of an issue. I'm sure you have heard of "Bob's BMW" He is a great source of parts, etc.

Switching to the bar mounted master from a newer bike is a common upgrade from the under tank cable actuated design.
