STARTING ISSUES

jamman18
I have a 77 750 and have checked the points which are new, wiring to coil, and the plugs. All are good but still no start. Any ideas?

Is it backfiring? If it is, you have switched the wires on the points.

Re: STARTING ISSUES

No backfiring....it won't even fire up. Just the sound of the starter turning. Someone suggested squirting a little gas in each cylinder to see if it runs for a short time suggesting a gas flow problem.

Short bursts of starting fluid to see if it starts at all. If not, then you have an ignition or timing issue. If it does, then it is likely a fueling issue.

Are you getting gas at the carb? Loosen a drain screw, and see if gas comes out.

Little fuel and it fired right up!   Must be a fuel problem.  Time to trace the fuel path!

Can I loosen the drain screws while the carbs are still mounted on bike? Thought they are in the very bottom

That is why they are there, so you can drain the carbs while they are on the bike, for storing, or removing the gas before removing the carbs.

Re: STARTING ISSUES

Just so I know ahead of time before I take a look at them do you have a picture or drawing of the location of the screws?  Also, is there a fuel filter on these models?

Haven't you downloaded the factory service manual from the manuals thread at the top of the home page here? There is a breakdown of the carbs in it that has every part labeled. As for fuel filter, unless someone has added an inline filter to the fuel line, the only filter is the screen in the petcock. But before you start tearing into the carbs, have you checked to see if you have fuel running through the line and petcock? It is rare that the bike would not run at all because of a fuel issue that would plug all four carbs at once. You most likely have a plugged fuel line, or petcock.

You'll know the drain screws when you see them. It will be the only screw in the bowl. Not counting the mounting screws,of course.

Close your petcock and pop the fuel line off the carb rack. Put the end in a cup and turn the petcock on. You should get a full stream of fuel. If ON position does not work, try turning it to reserve. It may be that 1 side is plugged and 1 side isn't. My 78 didn't have an in-tank filter when I got it.

Should I pull the main line off the T or just pull all the lines off?

On a 77, there should only be 1 line to the carbs. You must have an old carb rack with 2 inlets?
If so, disconnect at the tank and plug 1 hose on to it.

Pulled the peacock off and it was threaded on crooked and also the o-ring was half gone and gunned up inside the reserve area. When draining the tank the gas sure was slow coming out, especially in reserve. Will try cleaning and getting new o-ring. What is the best way to clean throughout the peacock?
