Might help some, but spray carb cleaner would do better.

Did you have any sort of filter on it?
Reserve is pretty much just straight though. You should be able to use a nylon bristle wand to clean it out. The "ON" side, you should be able to pull that tube off and clean the same way. a flexible wand should work.

If you can't get it through, soak as TOOLS said and then used compressed air on the nipple and see if you can get junk to blow out the top. Make sure you do both sides.

Re: STARTING ISSUES

Not sure if there is an in tank fuel filter but in order to get some gas to prime I disconnected the tube from the peacock and turned it on to regular flow. It came out just fine and also I cleaned and blew out the tubing that connects to the carbs. Everything is clean. That's what is so confusing. I could try checking all 4 plugs for spark again as the motor tries to start, just won't keep firing.

I almost missed mine when I pulled the tank apart, it was just a sleeve stuck in the petcock hole... Shine a flashlight in the hole with the petcock off, you should be able to tell pretty quick...

Ok, the second step to verify gas is to get some clear tubing and connect a piece to each drain nipple. Turn the tubes up and then open the drain screws. Fuel should fill the tube to whatever level the floats are set to, right about the top of the bowl, or just below.  All 4 should be right about the same height.

If you have that, then your engine should be capable of getting fuel.

You say it fires, but will not stay running. I am thinking your points might be bad, dirty, or wet.

That does not mean anything. I have seen brand new points, and condensers be bad, or installed incorrectly. One of the biggest problems is the wires grounding out that go to them. I would give everything a through check. If you have a timing light, hook it up, and watch the light for missing/erratic pulses as you crank the engine.

Re: STARTING ISSUES

jamman18
You know, I got to thinking about the electrical part of it again and still think that it is not the issue. I have to go back to my findings above that showed that the bike will fire right up when primed. Seems like that tells me the issue has to be more on the fuel side rather than anything electrical......

If there is a filter in the hole of the tank where the petcock attaches, how do I clean it?

Mine pulled out with gentle use of needle nose pliers.  Then I just cleaned it with some degreaser, then water, then compressed air...

My gas flow our of the tank is normal and doesn't seem to be stopped up. In the picture are the 4 tubes the drains?  How do I open them to check if the bowls are filling?

See that screw right above the tube in the picture? that's your drain.
