Forgot to ask; is it better to be under load or can I just put it on the stand and rev it up?  I know the latter would be a lot more fun........but I may not have the chance to get out and about for a while.

You can do it but being under load helps really brakup the gunk in there and blow it out. Plus it is cooling the motor. Put a big shop fan on it and you can rev it just don't over rev it

Think I will ride; more fun and better for the engine.  Thanks!

Rode the bike to work this morning.  It was smoking at 55 mph at 3000 rpm.  Going to take it out on the highway at lunch and take it up to 4-5000 rpm and see if the rest will burn off or if the engine needs a rebuild.  Is it possible to just replace rings and that is it or do you have to do the boring/honing, etc?

Just got back from my ride.  Started off at speed in 5th doing 4k for about 10 min and then finished up on a hill in 3rd doing 5k.  Lots of smoke but by the time I pulled into the parking lot and sat there, I gunned it a few times and there did not seem to be much smoke so hopefully it did the trick!  Again, used marvel mystery oil in cylinders and some in gas, ran it until the smoke stopped and then let sit for a week .  Then took it out and blew the crap out of it.  Also , changed oil and filter and went to 20w-50.  In addition, had the oil level at full which can cause blow by so I have it at half full now .  I guess time will tell the true results......

you dont need to bore but honing won't hurt and is only beneficial. if you have to take the head off to change the rings then why not clean it as well ya know. plus you can rent the tool from auto zone, put it in your drill at home, hone the cylinders and bring it back for all of your money back. no harm there!!! id say do it. i plan to do mine when i take it down to replace rings. also dont forget to order new gaskets as well when you order rings.

Cool!  How do I know what rings to order as far as how many mm exrtra on the size?  Would I have to wait until taking off heads and measuring the ID?  At what point would you have to replace pistons?

Other than the honing tool it looks like I would need a new set of rings, cylinder gasket, and cam cover gasket.  Anything else?

Don't kid yourself.
It's a big job.
Motor has to come out, not only the head comes off,
cylinders also.
