Shes Dead!

sean1381
Hello Everybody! i have just joined the site and this is my first posting. i hav just picked up what i thought was a great find 1979 750f.  the guy i bought it off of said, " it ran when i parked it 10 years ago!" so i immeaditly think, great! clean the carbs and ill be good to go! not so unfortunatly. i brought her home, hooked up the battery, turned the key on, and........ nothing! no lights (although the headlight is missing. could this be why?), no horn, wont crank. shes dead. i am not fimilar with cdi bikes, only points, so i run a hot wire to the + sides of both coils and jumped the starter. nothing. ive checked all the fuses and all the grounds i can find. i really dont know where to go from here. any knowledgable information would be greatly appreciated. i really dont want to send her to the bone yard! :( can someone PLEASE help us!!!?????

Is that the battery that came with the bike? If so, chances are it's pooched.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure your battery is good. Buy, beg or borrow a charger and charge the battery and take it off the charger and measure the voltage. Let it sit overnight. If the voltage in the morning is more than half a volt lower, you need a new one.

Take your multimeter and wiring diagram and work out from the battery starting at the main fuse. Inspect the main fuse block too, sometimes they corrode on the back. You say you jumped the battery directly to the starter and nothing. Did  the starter turn over, spin or click at all?

How much of "the headlight" is missing? Almost every electrical connection on the whole bike is made inside the headlight bucket. If it's just the lens missing,well...but if it's the entire headlight, you may have a bit of a job on your hands.

Oh yeah, and check out the main fuse. It's actually just a strip of metal. It's behind the side cover on the left hand side of the bike. It's inside a square, black box. There is a wiring harness connector that feeds in to the top of that box. That connectors is what keeps the box closed. If the sticker is still present it will be easy to spot. If not you'd never guess there is anything in there. If that fuse/metal strip goes ka-put it will kill the whole bike like you describe.

It's the one on the left.
