Side cover issue during tear down. PO's suck!

dave Esch
As I posted earlier I am doing a complete engine tear down. On the left side of my bike motor (75 750k) is a circular cover with heat displacement fins on it. Being a curious idiot, I took the 3 screws out holding the cover on. I found under the cover a Honda logo, as if that cover should not have been there. There are no markings on the cover anywhere, save for some worn wax crayon on the inside like it came from a bone yard. My issue is that the 3 holes that were drilled into the motor have rtv silicone all over them, and when I went to put the cover back on, my screws dont bite into anything. Its as if the PO drilled holes, filled them with silicone and just shoved screws in before the rtv cured. I have found pics of other bikes that do not have these heat fins on the lower end. I guess I dont have a question. I am just pissed. Who would drill holes into the motor? Why do people do this crap? Another reason why idiots should not own motorcycles. I guess the stupid thing goes back on. I'm not having JB Weld showing.

Crap like that sucks. I understand saving money but things like this are just stupid! Really makes a person mad. Do the job right, or just don't do it.

My "PO" liked to ride drunk. I got the bike after he crashed it. Luckily the frame and forks were not bent. Had to replace a rear turn signal, fix the vetter fairing, get a new fairing mount, new crash bars, and the exhaust had road rash on it.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

I hear you there brother. Some of the dumb things people do I would heli-coil the screw holes myself. quick permanent fix. Also some of those finned aftermarket covers are worth some $$$$$$$

Neat bike. That cover is just attached to the original Honda cover. It should have nut's, and washers on the inside to hold it on.

Hay I got to looking at this again, and I feel dumb I was thinking of the point cover on the other side. It has two screws. One top, and one bottom. That one is the alternator cover, and it does attach with those 3 screws, but it also holds the field coil onto the inside of the Alt cover. Here is a diagram.

Yeah, I was gettin on just now to tell you I figured that out as well. I pulled the cover off and when I didnt find any nuts rattling around I flipped it over as the coil damn near fell out. No worries. I just put the finned cover back on as it was. No worries.
