Simple removel of dowel pins in cylinder

I am rebuilding a 79 cb750k. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the dowel pins without damaging them. Mine are not "stuck" but they are very tight and using pliers or other devices is leaving mars/scratches in dowels. I will be reusing the dowels as they are in great shape. Any suggestions?

I am referring to the 12 long dowels that run from the crankcase up through the cyclinders. I am looking for a clean and simple way of un-screwing the dowels so I don't damage the metal. I plan on re-using the dowels once I get the engine rebuilt so keeping them clean and undamaged is my goal.

Your talking about the studs. Just take two nuts, and jamb them together on the stud. Then put your wrench on the bottom one, and screw it out. Just be careful sometimes they do not want to come out. Also it is not necessary to remove them for a rebuild. Reverse for installation.

Hi, I posted a question a couple of months ago and you responded with a perfect solution. Thank you. I have another question that I wanted to run by you. I have my entire engine out of my 79 cb750K and I need to separate the crankcase. All bolts are removed, and 95% of the crankcase pulls apart, except for one area near the generator rotor. For some reason this area will separate, but only by about 1/4 inch. All the rest of the crankcase is completely separated but I can't completely separate the crankcase because of the area near the generator. Would you have any idea as to why this won't separate or a tecnique I can use to get it apart?

When I split the cases on my 79, I ram into the same problem. The alternator needed to be removed. You may need the special tool honda recommends to get it off. Unless you've done so already, the oil pump neda to come off as well.

Thanks Luke. I have an odd situation. The entire crank case does separate, even around the alternator. I can get my fingers between the case, all around. In some areas, I can get my entire hand in between the cases. It feels like there is something catching just on the one side where the alternator is, but I can easily see the cases are apart, but I can't get them completely apart. I've even turned the transmission gears a bit thinking they might be stuck on something. When you got your cases apart, do you recall if there is anything in there can can "catch" to prevent the separation?

It was 6 months ago.  I think there's one bolt just above the oil pump on the left side, that held some internal piece.  I'll try and find it on the FSM, but that's about all I can remember.
