Spark

barnfind
This post was updated on .
I'm a little confuse, I put in new coils, new point plate with new points and condenser it's not completely
Timed right yet but the points gapped right. I have power the points and to the coils but nothing coming out
To spark plugs which are brand new and gapped proper. Does my static timing have to be dead on because I just eyed that up to see if I had spark. I had good spark when I put the plate in before I screwed around with timing. I don't have my multimeter on me it's at work should I do a proper static timing before I get bent out of shape over this or is there something else wrong I'm not seeing?

Thanks

Timing is just timing of the spark to place it at the proper point in the crankshaft rotation, and has nothing to do with spark. I am guessing that you have a wire grounded somewhere around the points plate. I once could not get any spark on a bike I had just replaced the points on, and it turned out the wires on the condensers were shorted to ground.

So I checked everything out, found the gap on one of the point was out so I regapped it now the one I regapped is sparking when turning over and still have no spark to wires!
Getting pissed off with bike!!

Once again : The purpose of the points is NOT to make a spark. Read that again.

The purpose of the points is to build up a field to be released to the coils at the right time.
The condensers prevent the current  flow until the proper gap opening is achieved.

The bike does not care if you are pissed off. It is just a piece of metal.

You can throw a tantrum but it will change nothing.
Only reading and understanding the instructions in the workshop manual will make a difference.
IF you do not have a workshop manual (actual book) it will just make everything almost impossible.

Lucky is right. If you do not have a manual, you can download the factory service manual for free from the home page here. To further explain the ignition system, the points are just an on/off switch. There is power going to the coil, then it goes to the points. When the points are closed they are grounding the circuit to make it complete. This is when the coil charges. Then at the proper time the points open, and the coil discharges to the spark-plug. This creates a spark (when you are checking for spark the spark-plug must be grounded.) The condenser absorbs the extra voltage, so that the points do not arc when they open. The system will work without the condenser, but not for long as the points would just burn up. Hope this helps.
