I noticed a list of special tools in the FSM. Are any of these necessary for working on my CB750 or is a good set of metric tools sufficient? I do think I will get an impact screwdriver, those case screws are tight!

You will need the impact screwdriver!!! However the only special tools in my toolbox, for a CB 750 is the clutch nut socket, and the rotor puller. Other then that, just a good set of metric tools, and your good, for anything on a CB 750.

The impact driver is god, no really, it is. it created life, light, everything...Or at least that is what you will think after using it for the first time! I completely agree with TOOLS. If you want to shadetree it, get the right sized socket and grind it to fit.
OH! one more special tool. A carb sync, this is a MUST HAVE. You won't use it much bit you WILL need one.
the morgan carb sync is the best but kinda expensive, something like 100 or so. A good set of vacuum gauges will do fine. Stay away from mercury sticks. I have them and don't really like em.

Definitely get an impact screwdriver, and if you don't have one already - a torque wrench.
I have a DOHC and have also found the valve lifter very helpful when replacing shims and the 90 degree screwdriver invaluable when dialing in my air/fuel mix.
I also ended up buying a carb sync tool, but you could build or borrow one if you need to sync your carbs.
For the vast majority of stuff though, it's a good set of metric tools that I use the most. I got a stubby set of Husky wrenches for like $12 on sale and a regular set of Husky wrenches for around $15 on sale.
I already had a decent metric socket set.

Thanks for that info! I'm glad I don't have to buy a new set of tools!

Carb sync, You mean that set of 4 guages used to synchronize the carburetors? I just watched that video about that and thought that would be a good thing to have.

The tool for the retainer nut? I just knocked mine off with a long drift. I know it's not the preferred method, but it doesn't have to go super tight when putting it back on,and it does have that safety plate that holds it locked down, too. Just a thought .
