Starter question

Lincoln Highway Bullitt
On my 1980 Cb 750f lately when the bike sits overnight. When I go to start it the selonoid just clicks. I put the bike in gear and rock it once and the starter works like normal. Is this just a dirty contact somewhere or has the starter seen its better days?

Sounds like a dead spot on the starter. That's what happens when a starter's going out on a car - it just clicks, if you tap it with a hammer and try it again, it works.

I'd wait for other's opinions as well, but the rolling trick makes me think dead spot.

A rebuild might be in order. The kits are not very expensive, and they are easy to rebuild.

One easy way to check would be to pull the starter, hook up an ohm meter across the leads, and slowly turn the drive gear.  If there are dead spots, the meter will go from zero ohms to infinity and back again.

My guess would be either a dead spot in the starter, or maybe bad brushes.  A rebuild kit will take care of the latter, but I think you may be looking at a replacement starter if it's the former.

Ok here is an update on my starter dilemma. After some digging around I come to the conclusion it is not the starter or selonoid. It is the neutral safety switch. I say this because when you pull the clutch lever in the starter works normal. Now my question is. Where is this located?
