Stripping and painting frame

Does anyone know the best way to strip/prep and paint the frame without damaging the vin plate? I'd like to go frame up on my project but would like to keep the main ID plate. I also wonder if I'll have any issue with state patrol or whatnot if the plate is removed. I know the VIN is stamped in to the frame, but don't know if they would have any issues with the original plate being removed.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Put 2-3 layers of duct tape on the Vin plate. Then sand blast the frame. That's the best way. You could also use paint stripper, but that is very messy, and you still have to sand. As, for the authorities, Every state id different. Don't take chances if, you don't have to.

Thanks guys. I'd rather keep the plate. All original, and then no questions about it being iffy or not. Paint stripper might be the route I have to take eventually. I don't have have access to a sandblaster large enough for a frame. This is something I want to try to do this winter anyway, just trying to get things planned out. I've had basically a parts bike for about a year now. Lol! Bought a whole titled bike a few weeks ago that didn't run and swapped the motor and harness over and it runs and rides now. Driving to Portland to buy a wheel tomorrow to swap new tires on to and hopefully I can be riding it around town this weekend! It's been a long time coming!

Check my 75 in my builds section. I taped of the vin plate. My frame wasn't that bad so I sanded
and primed and painted. I used the Krylon ultra coat and it worked great.

Just carefully tape it off and strip the frame. End of story.

I popped my plate off and then just riveted it back on. If you dont feel comfortable with this,then by all means dont do it,but it is an option.

I simply taped it and used wire tooth brush on joints and sanded most parts primed bare areas ,Rustolium engine paint ,had wk,s between coats,and clear ,It does chip but hasn't to stk.color ,mostly just chips the clear coats ,I hit with 220 W or Dry.Lil mo clear.

  YOUR stk. paint is best left on already has a good seal to metal or would be peeling or lifting already
MOST WILL strip completely down waist of time N money.Many Pro-Shop will say they have to or should,THIS IS for C.Y.A.(cover your/THERE azz)If been painted before or spot painted.

  Your state may not care if you remove and reapply but what about the one you will be riding through.?
