Are, you sure that is a 78? Looks like a 79, or later to me.

What makes you think it is not a 1978?
Is there something in the photo that confuses you? LOL

I thought the 78 was square, and had a seam/ridge down the sides. The 79 on DOHC bikes had a round swing arm, but the 79 was all by it's self. It used the smaller bolt like the SOHC bikes. Then in 80 they made the bolt thicker. And nothing about the photo confuses me.

Doesn't look like the one on my '78, nor another one off a 78 that I'm having powder coated to put on a 74 I'm rebuilding. Mine look more like what Tools is describing. Also, the opening for the axle is different.

Early SOHC swing arms. The one with closed ends is of a '76 F SS with rear disc brake. The lower one is 74 k with drums.Square with ridges. This is all i know for sure

|
Both of my 78s look like the bottom one in Shiny's photo

I beleive those are for all of the SOHC with a drum brake. The upper arm has the torque rod for the caliper. If anyone knows for sure about all of this i would like to learn the particulars

You were right Tools1 it is a 1980 sorry.
It is longer that the 1976 swing arm.
But it is only slightly longer than the Cb750 from 1978.
About 1.5 inches overall.
The bolt on those 1980's is larger than the 1978.
I just blew it on the date on the original post. Sorry everyone.

Only the 79 will bolt right onto an earlier bike. the 80 on has to have some modifications. The ends where it bolts to the frame must be trimmed 1/4 inch on each side. The roller bearings must be tapped in the 1/4 inch on each side also, and the insert tube also needs the 1/4 inch trimmed. After all that the holes in the frame need to be drilled out to 5/8 inch. for the larger bolt.

That is a lot of work.
The only advantage I guess is that the 1980 swing arm has needle roller bearings.

Yes with the modifications mentioned it would fit the earlier (1976) bikes and give the best advantage.
It would not be worth while on the 1977 and 78 bikes because they had longer swing arms anyway.
I compared the 1980 swing arm next to, (side by side) with the 1977-78 swing arm and if you moved the axle to the back of the slot on the stock 1977-78 swing arm it would be the same. So it is not worthwhile in my opinion to put the 1980 swing arm on the 1977-78 frame.
It would be worth it to put the 1980 swing arm on the 1976 and earlier frame.

"All the holes have to be drilled" Lets not make too big of a case for yourself.
It is just TWO holes, and they just need to be slightly larger.
Maybe some people should just ride stock bikes and take them to the dealership if they need anything at all.
