TOOLS!!! Re-Run!!! help me.

Muscle racer

I bought this Bike in Feb, and it wasnt running very well. thanks to this site, and 4 months later, it was running like a champ. its a 78 750k with 20k miles.

recently ive been hearing a knocking sound coming from the bottom right of the engine, around the gearbox area. it only happens when i hold the clutch or when i dont use the throttle. i have searched this entire site, as well as other sites, and I wanna hear from the experts(TOOLS & RERUN).

From what i read, it could be several things. some say its something in the engine that needs to be fixed, others say it could be carbs that need to be synched, or old CB's are just loud and its normal. I havent noticed anything different in the bikes performance. should i be worried the engine is going to blow up beneath me???, or just get the carbs synched???

I ride to work everyday but its only 3.5 miles. i know its an old bike, so i stay between 4-5k rpms, and havent gone over 65mph. yesterday i took my wife for a ride, and with the extra weight, the knocking noise is almost un noticeable.

One more thing, my tail light stopped working but my brake light still works. the light in the gauges stopped working as well, so i think the problem is related. all the wires are still connected, so is it the bike?? or should i buy a new tail light???

Please help me. Both my cars are in the shop, so I cant afford to send the bike also.

thanks in advance!!!!

I'm flattered, you think I'm an expert, but I just give logical mechanical advice. 20,000 is not a lot of miles, for one of these bikes. On the noise. I would drain the oil into a clean container, and remove the filter. Look in both, for any signs of metal, or particles of any sort. This will tell a lot. If the oil is clean. Then put in new, and see if that helps. The next step would be to sync the carbs. However before doing this. I would install new points/condenser, spark plugs, and adjust the valves.

I have never changed the oil on it yet. I have the shop manual so I'll use that to help. Do I buy the oil filter at any auto parts store, or do I need to go to a Honda dealer? It has new spark plugs, but I'm not familiar with the points/condensers or how to adjust the valves.

Do you have any idea about making my tail light work? I cant ride @ night. Lol

Thanks

Tail light and instrument lights may be on the same fuse.  If your tail light housing was loose, it's possible the positive wire for the tail light contacted the frame and shorted out the fuse.  Check for a blown fuse, and replace if necessary.

I don't have much expertise with the SOHC 750s, but I do know a little about wiring. I'd hunt down the schematic/wiring diagram for your bike on the home page and see where it all goes.

Good luck, and let us know if we can help more.

Yea. What Luke said. Just start chasing wires. The tail light, and the indicator lights should be on the same fuse. Black is power to the indicator lights, and the tail light from the switch is brown.
Also, you can get a Fram CH 6009 filter at most auto parts. It comes with new O-rings.

The tail light problem is fixed. It was the fuse. Simple.
I'm changing the oil and filter today. I hope that goes well.

If I have to synch my carbs, any advice for a first timer??! I found lots of good videos on tube but none on the same bike as mine. I have a good idea on how to do it. One thing I'm not sure about is where to hook up the hoses on the bike. The videos I have seen shows it hooked to the engine and not the carbs.

Any dos and donts??

I'll get back on later after the oil change.

Thanks guys!

There are little screws on the sides of your carbs. The ones on the 1-2 carbs are on the left, and the 3-4 are on the right. The #2 might have a vacuum line fitting instead of the screw. Remove the screws, and install the little tubes that come with the vacuum gauges. The #2 carb will be your base, so you will not adjust it. Remove the tops off of 1,3, and 4 carbs. You will see the adjusting screws, and lock nuts. Adjust them to the same reading as #2.
I would also suggest before syncing the carbs, you adjust the valves, timing chain, set the point gap, and timing.

Hey guys,

Here's an update.

I changed the oil and the oil filter. The oil was clean. No pieces of metal. So does that mean my engine isn't falling apart?

I wanna start synching the carbs. Tools said to check the points, valves and chain. I have the manual, but Is there a simplified version on how to do these things?? I ordered the synch gauges from eBay. Do I need to purchase any thing else in order to get these things done?

Let me know your thoughts

Thanks

Sounds like you have everything you need. I believe the cam chain adjuster is a 10mm,so im sure you got that covered.Clean oil is a good sign!!!Good luck syncing your carbs, you'll soon see just how easy it is to do.Rmemeber you need to remove your gas tank in order to gain clearance to everything. So either come up with another fuel source,or find a way to hang your tank, like an I.V. drip bag
