Tank fitment?

slownugly007
Ive been on the search for an earlier model gas tank for my 81 750ss. I like the lines of the 76 and 77 ss tanks, but after looking at them im not sure they will fit my bike or how exactly these are mounted. i know mine has the two rubber pieces at the front and one bolt at the back. has anyone swapped tanks? and if so did you have to fab up new brackets or will it bolt up to the existing mounting hole?

You are going to have a hard time getting the 76 tank to fit. The frames are entirely different in a bad way.

Not sure, but look, for bikes that have high tubes on the side of the back bone line the DOHC frame.

The tank on your bike can be made to work very well on a cafe actually. The biggest thing it just to tie everything together.I actually found a pic of a cafe with the SS tank on it and i think i would rather use the tank you already have. The SS tank really didnt look that great, like i thought it would.Maybe it is the Corvette side pipes,or the massive oil tank hanging out,but something about that bike just does not appeal to me.Especially the high mounted gaugesNow,that bottom pic, with a tank like yours,i dig that bike. You may not need a tank swap after all.But it would still be fun to do.Heck, have two tanks with 2 different paint jobs and swap them out according on your mood that day

One observation on the dohc ss tanks is that they look a little odd when you remove the stock side panels.
That red bike is pretty sick lookin though...
I think Mr. Ribs may have convinced me to not give up on my tank just yet, but I think I will probably grind off the little "ears" that hang down. Either that, or tie them into the glasswork of my seatpan.

If I were doing a cafe on a DOHC bike I would modify the tank, and do away with the whatever they are that hang down, and meet the side covers. A cut-off wheel, hammer, and a means of welding are all that's needed.
